Metro approves $6 million for 1/2 mile of new lane on I-84 freeway
In a rare bit of love for freeways, on Thursday July 19th, Metro (Portland’s metropolitan planning organization) approved funding for a project that will add capacity to an interstate located within Portland city limits. The $6 million project will extend an auxiliary lane on eastbound Interstate 84 one half mile between the Halsey St. and northbound Interstate 205 exits. Metro says the project is being “fast-tracked by ODOT after it found cost savings around the state.”
It’s interesting to note how Metro councilors — who pride themselves on supporting investments that improve bicycle and transit access — talk about why they supported this project. I’m also covering this because I think it’s important for people to understand how much we spend to alleviate congestion and just what results are expected for this $6 million investment.
Thoughts on Sunriver, Oregon (home of the best bikeway network in North America)
(Photos © J. Maus/BikePortland)
I just returned from a week in Sunriver, Oregon; a place unknown to many that just so happens to have, hands down, the best bikeway network in North America. Granted, it’s just a small vacation community (nestled in a valley adjacent to the Deschutes River about 15 miles south of Bend); but it boasts a 33 mile bicycle pathway system that connects every part of its 3,300 acres.
Developed as a master-planned community in 1968, Sunriver consists of a resort lodge, golf courses, a “Village Mall” with shops and restaurants, and over 4,000 private homes. But to me, the most impressive attribute of this popular vacation spot is its bike paths. It’s the only place I’ve ever been where the entire network is separated from automobiles. The paths are fully signed and maps are available everywhere (including on kiosks on the paths themselves).

Bicycle traffic detours in place on Broadway Bridge for two weeks
at Larrabee this morning.
(Photos © J. Maus/BikePortland)
A project by Portland Streetcar Inc. will detour bicycle traffic on the Broadway Bridge. The work to replace the non-slip coating on the sidewalks of the bridge began on Monday and will go through August 13th.
The north sidewalk is closed now and all traffic is being routed onto the south sidewalk. Next week, the project will flip sides and all bike traffic will use the north sidewalk. The Broadway Bridge is a very busy bikeway, and this project means that the relatively narrow path must accomodate people walking and biking in both directions.
Agenda set for first ever National Women’s Bicycling Summit
In the latest sign that 2012 is shaping up as a big year for women on bikes, the League of American Bicyclists is gearing up for the first-ever National Women’s Bicycling Summit. The event (not to be confused with the National Women Cycling Forum held during the National Bike Summit back in March) is being billed as the “Women’s Summit to Tackle Gender Disparity in Bicycling” and it will be held in Long Beach, California on September 13th.
Here in Portland, we’ve taken a leading role in encouraging women to ride. The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has had a ‘Women on Bikes’ program for many years, many local shops have women’s only wrench nights, we’ve got a healthy women’s racing scene, and many prominent women in the bike advocacy sphere — like Alta Planning and Design President and author Mia Birk and League Board Member and Executive Director of the Community Cycling Center Alison Graves — call Portland home.
