It’s going to rain, it’s going to be cold, and it’s going to be Halloween. There are plenty of opportunities to get into the spirit, costumed or otherwise. Want to ride into the dawn in celebration of bike fun? Move an antique bedroom set on your bike? Ride competitively through a muddy field? Or stay warm and dry while debating the merits of Copenhagen-style bike culture, or ogling handbuilt bike frames? As always, there’s something for everyone.
Thursday, October 29th
6:30pm – 10:30pm: Oregon Manifest: Bicycle Culture from Copenhagen to Portland
A panel discussion with unofficial Danish cycling ambassador Mikael Colville-Andersen, Portland Mayor Sam Adams, and reporter and bike author Jeff Mapes. $10 gets you food, beer, and lively debate over how we can make the best bicycling city. Also serves as the grand opening of the Dreams on Wheels exhibit (of which Colville-Andersen is the photographer). 539 NW Hoyt.
Friday, October 30th
7:00am – 9:00am: Breakfast on the Bridges
Yep, it’s that time again! Leave a couple minutes early for work today so you can stop and grab a cup of coffee, a donut, and some chilly conversation on the Hawthorne or Steel Bridge. Or have one of the brewers write you a tardy slip.
3:30pm – 5:00pm: Business on a Bike
Laid-back networking ride. Meet on the Esplanade under the Hawthorne Bridge.
5:15pm: Halloween Happy Friday Ride
Halloween version of the monthly ride that leaves from Ladd’s Circle for a route around Southeast Portland, ringing bells and wishing everyone a happy Friday.
5:45pm: Halloween Procession for Poor, Dead Bike Fun
Wear your best, most terrifying funeral attire to this ceremony to mark the death of bike fun as we know it. Ride leaves from under the west side of the Morrison Bridge at 6:07pm for outer Southeast where a New Orleans style wake will see bike fun out properly. Followed by an after party into the early hours.
Saturday, October 31st
9:00pm – 6:00pm: Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show
Come check out the work of forty of the most talented custom framebuilders from across the nation. $8 gets you all the gawking time you need, plus a pint glass or water bottle. 2537 NW 29th Ave.
9:00am – 3:00pm: Cross Crusade Race #5
A weekend of racing begins in Astoria. You’re free to get dressed up crazy, but Sunday is the official costume day.
11:00am: Halloween Bike Move
Perhaps the first bike move to feature a costume contest. Debbie is moving from SE 36th and Stark to NE 10th and Skidmore, and has a lot of heavy furniture (there will be prizes for hauling heavy things as well, though arguably the glory is its own prize). Coffee, snacks, food, drink, the usual.
8:00pm – midnight: OHBS Halloween Party and Costume Contest
Come to see the bikes, stay for the party. Beer, food, music by Chervona, and cash prize for best costume. $5 entry.
Sunday, November 1st
9:00am – 3:00pm: Cross Crusade Race #6
The second day of racing in Astoria is the official costume day — racers and bystanders go all out. Head up there to see the spectacle (and get inspiration for your own costume here).

A Warning to Parents.
On Nov,1 my son was competing in a cross crusade race in Astoria Or. He is 16 rides the junior class.
A pectator threw a full beer striking him in the face.
