7 kids, 6 adults, and an unforgettable carfree camping trip
On the July 4th weekend, my girls and I joined two other families for a camping trip unlike any other we’d ever done. Instead of loading up the mini-van and driving for a few hours to the mountains or the coast, we loaded up our bikes and pedaled our way to family camping bliss.
We rode from North Portland to Champoeg State Park (south of Wilsonville). It was about a 40 mile trip (each way) and the journey was definitely just as much fun as the camping itself.
The folks who joined us had also never done a bike camping trip, much less one with their little loved ones in tow. There were six adults and seven kids. The kids ranged in age from three months to eight years. They were all troopers, especially baby Hendrik, whose sweet little cry hastened our pedals to the next rest stop more than once.
Weekend Event Roundup (Updated)
Since I’ve temporarily disabled the event calendar function on the site (long story) and I don’t have as much time these days to do individual posts for upcoming events, I’ve been feeling the need to give more love to big weekend events.
So on that note, below is a quick roundup of upcoming bike events/rides that are on my radar screen (and should be on yours!)…
Mountain Bike Oregon (Friday – Sunday)
This annual off-road fest kicks off in Oakridge tomorrow. I did this event back in 2007 and still use the memories to stoke my dreams. Good people, great town, camping, beer, food, some of the best singletrack anywhere. Need I say more? (FYI: There’s another one in August if this is too late of notice)

Stolen From: My girlfriend’s house in LADD’S ADDITION! can you believe that anyone would steal a bike in fucking LADD’S ADDITION?!!!!?!!
It was resting against her New Belgium Tall-Bike in front of the porch. I noticed it was gone when I woke up around 2pm, but thought nothing of it because we usually borrow each other’s bikes. I got hold of her later around 6:30pm last night, and she told me she doesn’t have my bike.
SO, it went missing anytime between 10am and 2pm yesterday the 15th of July.

Description: I built this bike up from parts I got off Ebay, including NOS Dia-Compe brake levers/cable-housings. The wheelset came from a ’72 Schwinn Suburban, the Schwinn “S” stem-mounted shifters and stem and drop bars *NO BAR TAPE* and crankset came off a Schwinn Varsity. The seat-post is a Proponent. The seat has “shag”-style fabric all around the bottom with a Oregon Cannabis sticker where ya sit on it.
There is NO head-badge on the bike, I instead set a vintage Garbage Pail Kids “Diaper Dan” sticker where the head-badge would be.
There is also a black “Eat Shit And Die” sticker on the top tube real close to the head-set.
My bike is pretty unmistakable once seen mostly because i’ve NEVER seen another Orange/Red Schwinn Super Sport in Portland and the stickers i set on it that no one else has on their bikes.
please throw your lock on this bike if you see it and call me immediately!!!
