Weekend Wrap-up: Bikes as art, parade floats, and more
was all smiles after the
crowded opening to her
Bike Love art show.

Here’s a quick recap of a few events this past weekend.
Friday night I rolled across the I-5 Bridge to catch the tail end of the opening night reception for “Bike Love,” a showing of bike art at Angst Gallery on Main Street in Vancouver.
With a canary yellow bakfiets and many other bikes parked out front, it wasn’t hard to find. Hanging in the window I noted a street sign that read — “Boulanger Bikeway”. Angst Gallery is owned by Todd Boulanger’s partner Leah Jackson (Todd is a former transportation planner for the City of Vancouver was recently laid off amid budget woes).
Once inside, I was happy to hear that the night was a big success. Leah said the place had been jam-packed.
Doing the World Naked Bike Ride this year? Read this first
It’s less than one week from one of the most epic rides on Portland’s bike calendar (and with all the amazing rides we have, that’s really saying something).
Yes, the annual World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) commences this Saturday night. In 2007 we had about 800 people on the ride. Last year, the crowd was so large I don’t think anyone was even able to count it. My estimate put the number of riders at 2,000 or so.
This year, organizers estimate about 3,000 people will join the fun.
Popular bike comic creator coming to Portland
Rick Smith, creator of the popular web-based comic series Yehuda Moon & The Kickstand Cyclery, is coming to Portland.
Clever Cycles (908 SE Hawthorne Blvd.) will host the event and Smith will sign books and will have t-shirts and prints of individual strips available for purchase.
The Monday Roundup
High speed rail, the demise of the car in the US, its rise in China, Bush’s transportation policies, free bikes, carfree in Canada, a repealed bike license law, disgustingness reduction strategies
Welcome to Monday. Here are the headlines from around the Web that caught my eye last week…
– The NY Times waxes nostalgic about the rise and fall of General Motors. Michael Moore’s take on the matter is less reverent — more scathingly jubilant.
– P.J. O’Rourke misses the automobile age already and in a Wall Street Journal essay he blames environmentalists for its demise. In a counterpart piece for NPR, he blames feminism and Facebook instead.
