As we shared last week, the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) provided free bike valet services at today’s Inaugural event.
Jeff Peel with the DC-based League of American Bicyclists was on the scene this morning. Jeff sent over a few photos and this comment:
“WABA staff and volunteers valet parked over 2,000 bikes! I still saw hundreds locked up or being pushed/ridden around outside of our parking stations. Pretty impressive…resembled Amsterdam bike parking except with nicer bikes.”

Nice work Jeff! I’m sure all those bundled up and cold people appreciated not having to walk around looking for a place to park.

At first I was expecting as many bikes at the Inaugural as were here for Obama in Portland: Props to our “bicycle lanes” and bikes as far as the eye can see.
When I heard estimates of 2,000,000 people on site I imagine it was like a 3 mile mosh pit: no room for bikes.
At all.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder - if you think US style comfort / hybrid bikes look better than the old school steel of Europe.

This is awesome to see. Anyone have suggestions for bike parking near the Rose Garden/Memorial Coliseum for Blazers games? A valet service or some other secure parking would be great at regular local events not just special occasions.

How about that block between 1st & 2nd and Holladay & Multnomah.
A SmartPark installation: cagged, automated will lit and monitored on. Perhaps a vending machine outside that dispenses those key cards that are used at hotels.
Use them for entry into the into the secured area AND to unlock a locking bolt inside the area.
Why should autos get all the city's parking dollars? It's high time that the city put a serious bike parking structure in a serious bike use area.

DC has a great bike share system. Still working out the kinks, but good stuff: https://www.smartbikedc.com/program_information.asp
