BTA, activists work to save Sauvie span

While City Hall tries to work out its differences on the effort to move the old Sauvie Island Bridge span to NW Flanders street, bike advocates and citizen activists are moving forward in a push to raise awareness and support for the project.

So far, the effort is being led in part by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance. The BTA is reaching out to a myriad of local organizations and to neighborhood and business associations in Northwest Portland for support.

Supporters of a new velodrome on the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem suffered a setback last week when State Parks officials said they would not provide funds for the track.

The original proposal was to spend $130,000 to construct a temporary, wood-frame and plywood track to be housed in the Pavillion Building.

Steve Brown — a Portland-based businessman velodrome advocate who has been working on this project since last September — was already deep into the planning stages for events he hoped would begin at the Fair this summer.

The Portland Parks Bureau wants to re-imagine and renovate the old McCall’s Restaurant site in Waterfront Park (just south of Salmon Street Fountain).

As part of their ongoing process to select someone to redevelop and manage the building, Parks officials recently concluded a series of interviews with four groups that responded to a public request for proposals.

Eugene gears up for ‘Kidical Mass’

Two of the state’s top health officials are calling for Oregonians to get out of their cars — not just to save the planet, but to save themselves.

Oregon’s top doc, State Epidemiologist Mel Kohn, and Lillian Shirley, director of the Multnomah County Health Department, were both mentioned in an Oregonian article today about their efforts to make public health a larger part of the climate change dialogue.

Kohn told Oregonian reporter Don Colburn that, “If we get people out of their cars, not only do we reduce pollution, but we also get them walking.”
