A little over a century ago Portland was building and enjoying a network of dedicated bicycle paths. For a brief and glorious half-decade, bicycles were a focus for road-planning and road-building. At a time when Portland seeks to gain Platinum-level recognition as a Bicycle Friendly Community, we can look back at a few of the ingredients in Portland’s first golden age of bicycling.

Holiday Bike Drive – translators needed

The Community Cycling Center is holding its annual Holiday Bike Drive, a wonderful event that provides helmets, bikes and bike safety education to hundreds and hundreds of deserving children in Portland.

Volunteers are needed to help translate for those families that don’t speak English. We need people who can help translate Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Vietnamese.

Positions include helping registrations, guiding kids through the process of receiving helmets and bikes, and bike safety education.

If you are interested, please email me at volunteer(at)communitycyclingcenter(dot)org, and I will provide you more information, including dates and shifts.

It’s been over a year since I first shared the news that the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) was considering improvements to the ailing Bryant Street bike and pedestrian bridge.

Now, I’m pleased to learn that the Piedmont and Arbor Lodge neighborhoods — in close partnership with ODOT — are moving forward with their efforts to make the bridge safer, more attractive, and more well-known.

Gordon Price lecture

Gordon Price will give a free presentation on the effective integration of transportation in high-density environments, with an emphasis on land use. Price is a former City of Vancouver, B.C. Councilor and current Simon Fraser University and University of British Columbia Professor who teaches, researches, and writes extensively on urban development and planning.
