Karen Stiles is worried about
efforts to limit bicycle use
on the Willamette Greenway Trail.
(File photo)

Business is good for Karen Stiles who owns Waterfront Bicycle Rentals on the RiverPlace Esplanade just south of the Hawthorne Bridge. Part of the reason is because the popular Willamette Greenway Trail is all that separates her storefront from the river.

The trail is listed on maps as a multi-use path that is open to bicycles.

However, since the beginning of June, owners of condominiums located above Stiles’ business have pressured the Portland Parks Bureau (they manage the trail) to do something about bicyclists who ride too fast on the trail and put residents, strolling tourists, and diners in danger.

Small Museums by Bike – Explore Hillsboro

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Yes we are going to Rock n Roll on this exploration into the unknown depths of Hillsboro and Oregon’s geology. I say “exploration” because even I have not ventured where we will go – but hey we’ve got maps, we are taking the MAX most the way to and fro, and we will have a resident zoobomb geology professor with us on our journey. I doubt this will turn into the 24-hour sushi ride of Pedalpalooza – but who knows if we will come back the same as we left?!
Miles – not sure – but MAX will take many miles away from us (and hills!)
Length: Half day adventure!
Note: If you’ve never taken your bike on the MAX, no worries, we’ll teach you how

The details: We are visiting the Rice NW Museum of Rocks & Minerals (Bring $5 for admission). We’ll take the MAX train from Chinatown to Hillsboro, ride to the museum and back to MAX with a detour in downtown Hillsboro where we will hunt down the famous A & W family sculptures! Eat a late breakfast or early lite lunch, and bring a picnic item to share – we will picnic at the Museum’s grounds once we arrive.

Cost: $5 Museum admission/ plus $2 for each way on MAX (Total $9), Bring picnic lunch item to share.

SW Bike Boulevards Project ride

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Please Join Us to Improve Bicycling in SW

SWTrails is asking SW residents to help develop a similar bicycle boulevard system in SW. A preliminary map of possible routes has been developed, and we now need to identify the best low-traffic streets for bicycling. To do this, SWTrails is sponsoring a series of neighborhood bike rides to identify these routes. Each one will have a ride leader familiar with the neighborhood. These will be fun, leisurely rides that will last about 2-3 hours. Naturally, hills will be unavoidable, so ride for as long or as little as you like. During the course of the rides, you will be asked about which routes should be part of a bicycle route network in SW.

Hottest Day of the Year Ride

No one is safe from
the post-ride water fight!
(File photo)

So far, the weather is cooperating to make this weekend’s Hottest Day of the Year Ride another memorable event.

Last year, I joined over 900 other folks for a fun, urban loop followed by a massive water fight and an indulgent make-your-own ice-cream sundae buffet. This year, I’m bringing the whole family.

Organizers are hoping even more people show up and the goal is to make a serious run at the Guinness World Record for largest water fight (which according to event promoter Ayleen Crotty is 1,173 people).
