Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Danica (my almost 2 year-old)
wears a helmet because
she does stunts.

Leave it to the age-old helmet debate to smash the record for most replies in the Portland Bike Forums.

Irked by the, “soooooo many people every day riding without a care in the world when their brains could be splattered across the pavement at any time!,” a member named “ephany” decided to start a thread titled, “Why don’t you wear a helmet?

So far there are 83 replies and more keep trickling in every day.

Bikes recovered, meth addict suspected in St. Johns shop burglary

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Here’s an update to the story about a burglary at Weir’s Cyclery in St. Johns courtesy of Ira Ryan (who works in the basement of the shop),

“The cops recovered 10 bikes and most of the other stuff last night. The thief was a resident tweaker in St. Johns who the cops are on a first-name basis with.

He was trying to sell them in the plaza in downtown St. Johns and the cops followed him to his house (just 4-5 blocks from the precinct) where they found nearly everything that was stolen.”

Ryan says the bikes are a bit mangled and that the cops suspect that the remaining bikes were immediately parted out and sold.

Portland artist Rachel Siegel wants to celebrate what she refers to as Portland’s, “astonishingly diverse and unique community of cyclists” with a juried, photographic exhibition.

Siegel is still in the planning stages but she already has a working title, Cycle Seen: Picturing Portland’s Bike Culture, and she has met with potential jurors and gallery owners for the show which is likely to take place in early 2008.

This afternoon the Sprockettes will board their veggie-oil powered bus and set off for their first big tour. The ladies in pink will be on the road from today through July 31st for four performances with New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat.

Luckily for their many fans, they’ve launched a blog to chronicle their adventures on the road.

Remember to mark your calendars for August 18th when we welcome the Sprockettes home at the Portland stop of the Tour de Fat.

Have fun ladies!
