As bicycle advocacy and ridership in America matures, new solutions and ideas for integrating bicycles onto our roadways must be seriously considered.
For decades, we have been happy with conventional bike lanes, but as we get serious about reaching double-digit mode-splits, perhaps it’s time to go beyond a stripe of paint and consider physically separating bicycles from motor vehicle traffic.
Like two young children that, despite attempts at behavior modification just can’t seem get along, maybe it’s time we separated bikes and cars to save us all from nasty conflicts and make bike lanes safe and enjoyable for everyone.
A reader forwarded me an inspiring article from the Christian Science Monitor about a very car-conscious neighborhood in Germany.
Vauban — a new development of 2,000 homes just outside of Freiburg — has been designed to encourage car-free (I like to say “car-conscious”) living.
Plenty…especially if you’re a tango-dancing-bike-lover like Bill Alsup.
I first met Bill at a share the road rally out in Beaverton but I had no idea he was TangoBiker until I heard about an upcoming benefit for the Community Cycling Center. Let me explain…
According to his website, Bill “TangoBiker” Alsup teaches a basic tango dancing class every Sunday night. This Sunday is the 7th anniversary of that class and Bill has decided to turn the class into a special benefit for the CCC. Turns out that Bill’s fellow tango teacher is Gillian Leichtling, who just so happens to be the partner of CCC Executive Director Susan Remmers.
The BTA has hired several new staffers in the last few months, but the one you’ll probably be hearing most about is their new Policy Advocate, Emily Gardner.
Emily comes to this position after former Metro Area Advocate (notice the different title, more on that later) Jessica Roberts recently moved on to work at Alta Planning and Design.
Emily — who has a Master’s Degree in curriculum development and instruction from Michigan State University — is cramming her schedule to get up to speed on the politics, projects, and people that make up Portland’s bike scene.
