360 lbs of beer…by bike!
Posted by Jonathan Maus (Editor) on November 18th, 2005 at 12:06 pm
This morning Sara Stout and I moved two kegs of beer for tonight’s Bike Film Night from Widmer Brewing on N. Russell to the Clinton Street Theater in SE.
The kegs weighed 180 lbs. each!
It was pretty awesome to see the reaction from the folks at Widmer. They couldn’t believe what we were doing. They had their cameras out and everything. They said it was the most exciting thing that’s happened around there for a long time.
Check out some of their faces in the photos. I especially like this shot of the guys near the forklift looking at us like we’re crazy.
Don’t miss the Bike Film Night. Tonight, 9:00 at Clinton Street Theater (26th & SE Clinton)!
(If you think moving kegs by bike is cool…check this out)

Too cool, Jon! I can't wait to drink some of that beer this evening!

Jonathan, looks like a Burley trailer in the top photo -- you ought to send them a copy, as they'd surely be thrilled to know that you exceeded their recommended weight safety limit by 80 lbs. without mishap!

Jeff, they're both Burleys. The funniest thing is that when we got there, a guy said a keg weighed 90 lbs...so I thought no big deal. But he assumed we were getting pony kegs! When I realized they would be 180 lbs. I thought...cool! we're way over the Burley limit!

Kudos to you for sticking to your guns and picking up the beer on bikes. I also know of the folks over at the Community Cycling Center to have picked up beer from a distributor on Swan Island and then get it all the way back up the hill to their shop on Alberta.

Thumbs up! My housemates and I have always talked about doing this, and still end up taking the truck. Nice work!

The keg photos were great, but I was really impressed with the "Bike Move" photos. That looks like a blast. Do people just put out the word for help, of do these folks just know that many friends with trailers?

No doubt you had a backup plan just in case the Burley folded... right?
Too cool.

Wanna pick up a couple of kegs for my Christmast party?? Way to go!!

Jonathon,
You also need a way to email these kind of stories directly to people from your site.
You may already, I may be missing it, in that case,
Open mouth, insert foot....

Patrick, thanks for suggesting that. At the moment, there is no "email this post to a friend" feature...however, the title of all posts serve as a handy "permalink" that you can easily copy/paste into an email to point a friend to a specific post.
Thanks for the input and I'll look into making "email a friend" even easier down the road...

Pete, about the bike moves...there is a page about them on the Shift website. And yes, people usually just post an email to the Shift email list and volunteers show up ready to help!

Way to go - One Less Truck!
For the last couple of years I've been taking small kegs (5-gallon size) from Yamhill Brewing Company to friends' parties on Tri-met, using a roller cart for comfortanle walking to and from the party.
When empty - these lite guys can be returned by Bike, in a big backpack, basket or Java Tote. 2 growlers fit perfectly - just put a newspaper between jugs. http://www.javatote.com)
btw, YBC's new tasting Room/Cafe is now open: as The 9th Street Public House (938 SE 9th)
9th was re-paved - now great for bikes. When you schedule a bike meet-up at The 9th Street Pub - ask to park bikes inside the Party Room -it's next to the Tasting Room. (watch for Wi-Fi & spiffy outdoor Bike Racks soon...if you want to help Kool Bike Racks happen here, join my Friends of YamhillBrewCo list & speak up!)

Let's arrange for a loaner keg trailer on-site at YBC...as these are hands-on Brewers who might even build 'em for us. The idea might catch on at other places, yes?
