Washington County seeks input on ‘Neighborhood bikeway’ routes

Washington County’s map in progress.

Bicycle boulevards, neighborhood greenways — whatever you call them, the low-traffic streets marked by sharrows and low-stress crossings are one of the best things about Portland’s bike network.

Now, Washington County is preparing a map of what it’s calling “neighborhood bikeways,” and looking for the public’s help. A new interactive map invites people to submit their preferred bike routes across the metro area’s west side to help inform planners about the best possible paths.

City transportation director’s bike stolen from outside office

The bike that introduced Portland transportation director Leah Treat to pedal commuting can’t catch a break: It’s now been stolen once from each of the three cities where she’s worked.

Its most recent swipe came some time Thursday night, when Treat cable-locked her blue Breezer Greenway in the loggia outside day care entrance at the Portland Building, where she works.

“Because I had a ton of meetings that night at various places around town, I ended up leaving her overnight,” Treat, who joined the bureau in July, wrote in an email Monday. “I now know that wasn’t such a smart thing to do.”

The bike, which she’s named Beatrice, has a white seat, white grips, black fenders and a “LaSalle” parking permit on the front fender.

The Monday Roundup: Guerrilla rainbows, Lance documentary & more

Tweeted photo by Michelle Demishevich via NYT.

For Bike Commute Challenge month, Portland bikeway builders KPFF are sponsoring our regular roundup of the bike news that caught our eyes this week:

Urban color revolt: A 64-year-old Istanbul man painted a public staircase in rainbow colors. Local officials repainted them gray. Now guerrilla artists are painting public walkways all over the country in solidarity.

Seattle speed cameras: Oregon’s legislature decided not to boost anti-speeding cameras this year. Seattle has taken the opposite tack and now has $14.8 million from school-zone speeders to spend on traffic improvements near schools.

“The Armstrong Lie”: A documentary captured racer Lance Armstrong behind the scenes as his doping scandal erupted. It’s at the Toronto Film Festival this week.

Evolution of the bicycle: Neat new poster lays out an illustrated bicycle family tree.

Getting started down the ‘People’s Coast’ – Astoria to Tillamook

People's Coast Classic - Day One-2

Few towns can match the scenic charms of Astoria.
(Photos © J. Maus/BikePortland)

The fourth annual Amgen People’s Coast Classic got off to a near-perfect start today. The ride is a fundraiser for the Arthritis Foundation and everyone on the ride has been impacted by some form of arthritis in one way or another. Some people are riding for their children or other family members who have been stricken with the disease, others are riding for friends, and some are riding for themselves — using bicycling as a key part of their ongoing treatment.

The PCC is smaller than its sister ride, the California Coast Classic. There are only about 50 riders here this year. Add in all the support staff and volunteers and we’re still shy of 100 people. But what this ride lacks in size, it more than makes up for in the essential elements of any great organized ride: the support and food has been top-notch so far; the people are fun and friendly; and the route is world-class (even if the infrastructure itself is subpar in many sections).

Citing a possible 9-minute auto delay by 2035, ODOT dismisses bike improvements on Barbur

The Oregon Department of Transportation brushed aside proposals to allow safe bike travel on Southwest Barbur Boulevard, raising the possibility of “unacceptable impacts” that might result from replacing a northbound travel lane with dedicated bike lanes.

“While some have framed the removal of a motor vehicle lane on the bridges as a quick and easy, ‘noimpact’ solution, there are impacts that need to be considered,” the agency wrote in a memo distributed Thursday evening.

The memo cited estimates that removing one of Barbur’s four travel lanes would increase northbound auto travel times between 5 and 15 percent today, and somewhere between 10 and 65 percent by 2035.

During the busiest few minutes of the morning on the 4.9 mile corridor in question, it comes out to an additional delay of somewhere between 84 seconds and 9 minutes over the course of the next 22 years.

Update 8:03 pm: I’ve changed these figures (previously 1.8 miles and 36 seconds to 4 minutes) to include the full stretch of road studied and to allow an apples-to-apples comparison of travel times in 2035. -MA
