Notice of Trail Closure along the Springwater Trail
Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, October 28th, 2013, Portland General Electric will begin work along the Springwater Trail between SW Pleasant Valley View Dr. and SE Circle Ave. to improve service reliability in the area. This activity is expected to continue for eight days (excluding Saturday and Sunday), ending at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6th.
Everyone’s talking about the Live the Revolution event happening tomorrow night (Thursday, 10/17) at Clinton Street Theater. The event is organized by Sugar Wheel Works, a custom wheel-building company based in north Portland. This is the fourth year Sugar’s owner Jude Gerace has put on the event. In addition to being a fundraiser for the Bicycle Transportation Alliance’s Safe Routes to School programs, Live the Revolution is also an anniversary party for Gerace, who opened her doors back in 2009 (as Epic Wheel Works, a name she was forced to change due to the threat of legal action from Specialized Bicycle Components).
The event draws on the personal bicycling stories of interesting local personalities. The list of speakers includes: bicycle builder Joseph Ahearne; head chef at Clyde Commons Chris Diminno; online editor of Bitch Magazine Sarah Mirk; and writer, rider, and photographer Heidi Swift.
An upcoming renovation project at Powell’s Books in downtown Portland has put the future of its iconic, bike book themed racks at the corner of SW 10th and Burnside in question.
According to the land use review notice (PDF) available via the Portland Bureau of Development Services (and brought to our attention by Doug Klotz), Powell’s is planning a storefront improvement project that will bring changes to the south and east facades of their flagship downtown store. The plans call for a new “porch” design that will eliminate the existing art bike racks and swap them out for nine PBOT-issued staple racks that will be placed on a new curb extension at the northwest corner of 10th and Burnside. (Note: These new racks won’t be an on-street bike parking “corral”, they’ll be placed on an extension of the existing sidewalk that will use space currently occupied by two auto parking spaces.)

Stolen From: The rear wheel (note that the photos shown are of the front wheel which I still have) of my old school commuter bike was stolen yesterday afternoon from a bike rack next to the Convention Center. It’s an old 1989 Matrix rim with a black/orange treaded tire and a slight aero “V” profile that doesn’t work with many other bikes/rear derailleur setups, and it’s really hard to change tires/tubes because of the old school “V” design. I’m offering a $20 reward in case anyone comes across this wheel because I need to get around town on my bike and I’m not good riding unicycles =)
