The Monday Roundup: Spain’s new touring paths, Ford’s urban shift & more
Here’s the bike news from around the world that caught our eyes this week:
Economic engines: Andalucia, Spain, is making a major play to boost its economy with bike tourism with a plan to build 3,200 miles of bike paths by 2020.
Auto futurism: At the Detroit Auto Show this month, Ford Motor Company’s CEO said that adding more cars in big cities is “not going to work” and suggested his company is looking into new products related to public transit and/or car sharing.
Mount Hood leaders map their course to become a bike-recreation Mecca
(Photo: J.Maus/BikePortland)
WELCHES – The slopes south and west of Mount Hood could become Oregon’s next great bike tourism destination, Clackamas County leaders said Saturday at a half-day conference here in the old volcano’s foothills.
“We are tourism-driven,” said George Wilson, a director of the Villages at Mount Hood and the organizer of the event. “It’s our only industry.”
It’s also an industry that currently booms each summer and winter and slackens during the “shoulder seasons,” as fall and spring are sometimes called in the Mount Hood area.
After city code change, Overlook developer upgrades bike & car parking and moves upmarket
(Image: TVA Architects)
Nine months after Portland began requiring on-site auto parking to be included in all large apartment buildings, one of the first test cases is about to break ground.
Overlook Park Apartments, which will start construction in April at the northeast corner of Overlook Park in North Portland, has been completely redesigned after the developer switched architects and scrapped a plan that had his neighbors up in arms over its lack of on-site auto parking.
The resulting building will have paid auto parking, larger rooms, three fewer units, higher rents and half again as much bike parking: 108 indoor spaces for 63 units, with an on-site bike service stand and built-in tools.

Lack of sweeping makes for challenging conditions on “Dirty 30”
(Photos by J. Maus/BikePortland)
On the official City of Portland bike map, NW St. Helens Road/Highway 30 looks like a nice solid bike lane (see below). It’s the only north-south bike lane on the west side of the Willamette River between northwest Portland and Sauvie Island (and beyond). As such, this bike lane is an important route for many people — whether they’re commuting to St. Johns or using it as a gateway to many popular riding destinations.
Unfortunately it’s usually full of dirt, gravel, and other debris. It’s so bad that I recently learned in some circles it’s known as “Dirty 30”.

Surprise! Typical Portland bike commute is shorter than driving
“I’d love to bike to work, but it takes too long.”
Actually, nope. Well, depending on how you look at it.

Short on storage space? Portlander builds her own bike hooks
Here’s a quick bike how-to that can save some space in a garage while minimizing drilling into the walls.
It’s from Halley Weaver, who many Portlanders might know from her performances as a “zero-emissions harpist.” With space at a premium in her garage, she threw together a simple plan to consolidate: hang the 12 bikes from the walls.
Weaver shares the specs on her blog:
We are renting the townhouse we’re in and can’t be drilling a ton of holes in our garage. What did we decide on doing? Due to our transportation confines, we got a 6″ x 2″ x 12′ board and had it cut in half at the hardware store. So now we have two 6′ boards. We picked up eight 4″ lag bolts (2 for each end of each board) and 12 bike hooks.
