Pedalpalooza Parade route and advisory

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Just a quick update on tonight’s Pedalpalooza Kickoff Parade.

Remember that because of Rose Fest activities several bridges might be closed for extended periods of time and due to construction on Naito things are pretty ugly right now. So if you’re headed downtown from the Eastside, either give yourself plenty of time to get down there, or ride further south, cross on the Hawthorne Bridge, and then head over to Jamison Square in Northwest.

Cyclists must use more caution on popular paths

crowded Riverfront path

[Do you share the path?]

The warm sun has brought throngs of people out to our popular multi-use paths. Riverfront paths like the Eastbank Esplanade and bridges are especially crowded.

Thanks to great weather and publicity – like this article in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer extolling the virtues of our waterfront – increased numbers of tourists and newbie, fair-weather cyclists are using these paths. Like a new racer in a peloton, many of these folks may not be used to riding or walking in crowded conditions.

Bike to Work Day

[The infamous Dabby.]

Some of you might be familiar with Dabby. He’s a regular commenter on this site, a long-time Portland bike messenger and a somewhat infamous, provocative and enigmatic character (check out Dabby in my photo archives).

Hoping to capitalize on his charisma, the Portland United Messenger Association (PUMA) has debuted a “Dear Dabby” column.

They’re taking your “Dear Dabby” questions and printing them on the PUMA website. If you’ve got something you’d like to ask an outspoken, veteran local bike messenger, now’s your chance. Just email Dabby at johnnyrocket29 [a] yahoo.com.

City’s Platinum push rolls along

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Yesterday I attended a Platinum Strategy Meeting with friends from the Office of Transportation and the BTA. Also at the table were Mia Birk from Alta Planning+Design (former PDOT bike coordinator) and City Commissioner of Transportation Sam Adams.

We have these meetings once every few months to check in on programs and initiatives that are being carried out with the overall goal to be named a Platinum-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists (check out this page for more on Platinum).

Here are updates on a few topics you might be interested in:

Stolen: Black Miyata

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Posted by “Ohnny”

Ok this bike is my favorite bike and it got stolen right from my porch this morning around 11:30

Its a flat black Miyata that has many many microcosism stickers all over it. It has only a front brake and the brake handle isnt bolted on to the frame. The handle bars are bull horn handle bars that I cut myself. The d-railor is removed so its a single speed without the actual single speed converstion. Any infomation or you have spoted this bike please call me at 503-281-3239 and ask forJonny. This bike is my job so I REALLY NEED IT!

Bike lovers, start your engines…

Tomorrow is the start of Shift’s annual Pedalpalooza, an unprecedented frenzy of bike fun.

kick off parade

[Last year’s parade.]

I think we’re pushing nearly 150 bike events over the next 17 days. If you haven’t seen the calendar and mapped out your plan of attack, do it now.

Things get off to a rollicking start with tomorrow’s Kickoff Parade leaving from Jamison Square (NW 10th and Johnson). Get there at 5:45 to decorate your rig (compliments of SCRAP) and get ready for a fantastic, fully escorted, no stopping, take-over-the-streets spin through downtown.

[BikeWorks’ Kim Fey]

North Portland BikeWorks is a non-profit, collectively run bike shop and learning center on Mississippi Street. Far from just selling and working on bikes, they provide information, resources and programs to the community and they are particularly known for their Women and Trans Bike Repair Nights, a free workshop that happens every Wednesday night from 6-8pm.

This popular program is now in its fourth year and has given hundreds of people the skills to works on their bikes in a safe and supportive atmosphere. This entirely donation-based event is the only one of its kind in the nation.
