If you’re out and about on two wheels today, remember to respect the heat. It’s hot out there (as if you didn’t know already) and it can make riding not only uncomfortable, but downright dangerous if you’re not ready for it.
We hear a lot about how the dark, cold, wet winters keep folks from riding, but the other day a friend of mine said showing up at his destination dripping in sweat after a bike ride was almost just as much of a deterrent. (I can relate. Last week I realized after riding home that the back of my shorts had two huge sweat spots on them. I’m O.K. with my bike identity, but I realize how butt sweat might challenge someone’s social self esteem. I thought of sharing a photo but thought better of it (you’re welcome).)

Here’s a selection of the stories that caught our eye in the last week:
– It’s not looking good for a timely reauthorization of the federal transportation bill, or for the Obama administration’s support for innovations in transportation funding.
– Through the Cash for Clunkers program, the federal government is now helping Americans trade in their old cars for new ones, to the tune of up to $4,500. And the effects are becoming apparent as local car dealerships get a boost.
– Maureen Dowd makes a comparison between driving while distracted by our phones and a dangerous drug habit.

Paint a little dinged up here and there, with rust, especially around the top tube where “super le toure” is written (from my bike lock). Wheels are fairly new with good tread, new brake pads and cable housings. One rear Planet Bike fender. At the time it was stolen, front brake cable and front derailleur loose, and derailleurs a little out of alignment.

Description: Gold and black Specialized hybrid-ish bike. 24-speed, with unhappy gears (#2 and 3) on the rear gear set. Specialized foam seat with several rips and tears. Seat is worn down to the yellow foam on the very front, left side. Black bike bell on left side handlebar. Standard planet bike front and rear lights. Black fenders, front and rear. Black rack over rear wheel. Gray rubber handles are slightly sticky from use. Front brake screeches pretty badly. Front bike fork has shock absorbers. The ends of the brake handles have been scratched at the tip, so the little ball ends are now mostly silver (instead of black). The water bottle holder is positioned on the underside of the frame so that it points toward the front wheel.
