🚨 Please note that BikePortland slows down during this time of year as I have family in town and just need a break! Please don't expect typical volume of news stories and content. I'll be back in regular form after the new year. Thanks. - Jonathan 🙏

Photo of the Week: DeFazio and Oberstar’s pedicab ride

As we mentioned yesterday, Congressman Jim Oberstar (D-MN) is currently on a tour promoting job creation through transportation infrastructure spending. Before coming to Portland, Oberstar stopped in Eugene to take a tour of stimulus funded projects. Joining him on the tour was Eugene Congressman Peter DeFazio. To get around, the two hopped in a pedicab from Emerald City Rickshaws which was pedaled by Portlander Ryan Hashagen (who owns Portland Pedalworks, the two businesses are sister companies).

If you’ve noticed that the roads are a bit more full of bikes than usual, it’s because the BTA’s Bike Commute Challenge is underway. The month-long event is in its 16th year and if last year’s record-breaking participation is any indicator, there are likely to be several thousand brand new bike commuters on the roads.

The Challenge is a friendly competition between workplaces to see who can log the most trips by bike. There are over 1,100 teams and nearly 8,000 individuals currently logging trips on the BikeCommuteChallenge.com website. Once logged in, you can log your trips and even set up head-to-head competitions. Teams are separated into a number of categories based on size and other factors (like non-profits, public agencies, and so on). After results are tallied, the BTA hosts a big and awesome party to celebrate (read our report and photos from last year’s event).

Last year, riders logged over 1.2 million miles. One-third of the way through this month, riders have logged 262,624 miles.

Sunday’s ‘Cycle Swap’ will breathe new life to riverside warehouse

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

John “Coop” Cooper.

This Sunday, a warehouse under the east side of the Fremont Bridge that sits partially over the Willamette River will be buzzing with bikes, bike parts, and the people who love them. The PDX Cycle Swap is a new event that its organizers plan to hold every second Sunday of the month. With competitions, live music, vendors, food and more, it looks to be a great event that will bring the community together and hopefully become a Portland mainstay (and I’m not just saying that because he’s an advertiser!).

The Swap is being put together by 27 year-old Portland native John Cooper (his friends call him “Coop”). Coop says his vision for the event is a “Saturday Market feel but strictly geared toward bikes.” I asked Coop to share a bit more about himself and what we can expect on Sunday.

What is the Cycle Swap and how did it come about?

Checking in on the Broadway Bridge detour

Broadway Bridge detour observations-12

Despite detour plans recommending
against it, some people are riding
across the bridge in the
main travel lane.
(Photos © J. Maus)

I spent some time yesterday watching how people on bikes were handling the detour onto the Broadway Bridge. The bridge just (partially) re-opened to traffic last Friday and currently there are two lanes open as well as the south sidewalk. All bike traffic is supposed to only use the sidewalk, but I noticed yesterday that some people are taking the lane and there’s some confusion about how to get onto it.

Stolen From: Stolen from my home on 38th and Division
Neighborhood: Southeast
Owner: Aimee Amparo

Dropout handlebars that were black, and a break on the left handlebar that was crooked and barely worked. It also had a bouquet of wheat wired to the handlebars. It is a fixed gear with a kind of loose chain and a frame to fit between 5’6 – 5’8 i’d guess.
