Family Fun Bike Ride Plans Tour de Pie

Portland, OR — November 9, 2010 — The Thanksgiving holiday is all about gathering with friends and family, giving thanks for our blessings, and eating pie. Lots of pie. Portland’s monthly family fun bike ride will celebrate these traditions with a “Tour de Pie” in close-in SE.

The Kidical Mass Tour de Pie will be a rolling exploration of southeast Portland’s pie establishments. Stops are not yet finalized, but will likely include pizza pie, fried pie, and of course the traditional baked-in-a-flaky-crust pumpkin pie.

Would ‘strict liability’ help curb America’s distracted driving habit?

If marketing campaigns and PSAs don’t curb distracted driving and we lack the resources to enforce laws, how will we ever learn that driving a multi-ton vehicle on a road shared with people walking and biking is an extremely serious responsibility?

As we struggle to figure out why an “alarming” amount of people are being killed while walking on our roads here in Oregon, and we mourn the death of a 23 month old who was hit while crossing a North Portland street yesterday (was being pushed in a stroller), I want to share the concept of “strict liability” that is current practice in the Netherlands.

Tyler Farrar, one of the fastest professional road racers in the world, will sit down with local journalist Heidi Swift for an interview event in Portland this Sunday.

Farrar, a 26 year old native of Wenatchee, Washington, ascended to superstardom with a stellar 2010 campaign that saw him garner multiple stage wins in two of bike racing’s most prestigious events, the Tour of Spain and the Tour of Italy. Farrar has confidently staked his claim as one of the fastest sprinters in the world with wins over the likes of Mark Cavendish and other big names.

Proposed development near Oregon City could impact popular bike route

A scenic road and popular bike route between Oregon City and the Clackamas River could be severely impacted if a proposed, 139 acre development moves forward. Clackamas Compost Products, LLC filed a permit in August with Clackamas County in hopes of building a yard debris composting and biomass energy facility on Redland Road (about 10 miles southeast of Oregon City, map here).

The proposed development has raised quite a bit of ire from surrounding residents, who fear the industrial facility will ruin the bucolic setting of surrounding farmland and pastures. A traffic study carried out by the company themselves says the facility will add an additional 100 heavy truck trips to the road.

A super cool “Christmas light” string strung around the bike that lights it up yellow at night and blinks. Seriously. Don’t laugh. You know it gets you seen.
• Two headlights: One “Cats Eye” and one “Princeton Tec” LED array (with a battery pack that straps to the bike frame)
• A bolt-on rack on the back seat.
• A “Team Oregon” sticker on the left side. If this is removed, there’ll be scuff marks from being chained to the bike rack.
• Two panniers (saddlebags). A red flashy on the left one. I think I have a couple of clips on them too to clip stuff on.
• ‘Forte’ pedals – with clips on one side and regular on the other.
• The seat post on this bike is actually aluminum, not black as pictured here on the stock photo. So if you see that, it’s probably mine.
