This guest post is by Michael Andersen of Portland Afoot, a new “10-minute newsmagazine” and wiki about low-car life in Portland. Read more of his contributions to BikePortland here.

Will the walking movement ever be as successful as the bike movement?

Across the nation, biking advocates spent the last decade winning. And walking advocates have spent the last decade noticing.

Pedestrians may be “the club everyone belongs to but no one joins,” as a foot-traffic activist once lamented. But here in Portland, where the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition and Bicycle Transportation Alliance were incorporated within nine months of each other in 1991 and 1992, we tend to put a lot of faith in walking.

The Oregonian: “Massive therapeutic intervention” needed to make roads safer for all

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

The Oregonian Editorial Board published a timely piece in today’s paper about the need for all of us who drive to take stock of our actions and do a better job looking out for people walking and biking on our roads. Here’s the opening:

Hey, you.

You need to have a “full and frank” conversation with yourself this evening. Looking in the mirror, you the driver ought to give you the walker a piece of your mind, and then switch roles.

Quite simply, both of you — and all of us — need to do a better job of paying attention. This year is shaping up as a terrible one for Oregon pedestrians.

Would ‘strict liability’ help curb America’s distracted driving habit?

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

If marketing campaigns and PSAs don’t curb distracted driving and we lack the resources to enforce laws, how will we ever learn that driving a multi-ton vehicle on a road shared with people walking and biking is an extremely serious responsibility?

As we struggle to figure out why an “alarming” amount of people are being killed while walking on our roads here in Oregon, and we mourn the death of a 23 month old who was hit while crossing a North Portland street yesterday (was being pushed in a stroller), I want to share the concept of “strict liability” that is current practice in the Netherlands.

Proposed development near Oregon City could impact popular bike route

Residents have vocally opposed
the project with signs like these.
(Photo: ProtectRedland.com)

A scenic road and popular bike route between Oregon City and the Clackamas River could be severely impacted if a proposed, 139 acre development moves forward. Clackamas Compost Products, LLC filed a permit in August with Clackamas County in hopes of building a yard debris composting and biomass energy facility on Redland Road (about 10 miles southeast of Oregon City, map here).

The proposed development has raised quite a bit of ire from surrounding residents, who fear the industrial facility will ruin the bucolic setting of surrounding farmland and pastures. A traffic study carried out by the company themselves says the facility will add an additional 100 heavy truck trips to the road.
