Northwest Portland based parts distributor Cyclone Bicycle Supply is looking for someone to paint a bike-themed mural on the side of their warehouse. Company staffer Ashley Brewer contacted us recently to share that they want to spruce up their “big ugly gray” headquarters building at NW 21st and Vaughn.

Here’s more from Ashley:

The Monday Roundup

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Here’s the news that caught our eyes week…

– In NYC: The clowns have come out to defend an embattled bike lane alongside Prospect Park, police have been ticketing anyone on a bike riding over 15mph in Central Park, and more momentum builds to make both those parks permanently carfree.

Why is there so much road rage (not to mention internet comment rage) towards people on bicycles? One writer takes on the task of explaining the hate.

Portland Car Free Days (Day 2)

a special event in 2006.

Director of PBOT Tom Miller told us today that he supports making a block of SW Ankeny Street carfree.

Miller said he met with business owner Dustin Knox yesterday and the two, “sketched out a potential pathway to success.” Knox owns a bar on the stretch of Ankeny between SW 2nd and 3rd and he was featured in a story in Willamette Week on Wednesday. In that article, Knox said he and other business owners wanted more space for tables and chairs for their customers, but that people on the street are too cramped by cars. (This stretch of Ankeny is very narrow (therein lies its charm) and has a parking lane and one through lane.)

Salem Watch: CRC could get vote in House committee Monday

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

“The BTA is concerned about the cost of the CRC… Though this bill does not have a fiscal statement the bridge itself puts the State of Oregon on the hook for at least $400 million dollars.”
— Gerik Kransky, BTA

Oregon lawmakers will weigh in on the controversial Columbia River Crossing project this Monday when House Joint Memorial 22 (text) gets a public hearing and possible vote in the House Transportation and Economic Development Committee.

HJM 22 is a pro-CRC statement that, “urges the federal government” to fund the project. If passed, it would send a strong message that Oregon is behind the project and a copy of the statement would go to President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Speaker of the House John Boehner, every member of the Oregon Congressional Delegation and to US DOT Secretary Ray LaHood.

Here’s an excerpt from the text of HJM 22:

New MTB trail system planned in Cascade Locks

Some of the proposed trails.
– Download larger map here

It’s still a drive from Portland, but as far as I’m concerned, any new mountain bike trails in our region are worth celebrating and supporting. It’s with that in mind that I share news of the Cascade Locks International Mountain Bike (CLIMB) Trails System. This project, in the works since 2007, includes a plan for 25 miles of MTB trails that would be developed as a major tourism draw for Hood River County and the city of Cascade Locks. Here’s more from a fact sheet on the project:

Bike to Blazers is coming! Get all the details

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward
Bike to Blazers

Me, circa 2006.

When I put together the first Bike to Blazers event back in 2006 (see photo at right), it was just a group ride to the arena with a few small perks we worked out with Blazers front-office staff. The goal all along was to get the Blazers organization excited about it so they’d adopt it as their own. After a super-fun and successful event last year, it seems like that’s starting to become a reality.

This year, the Blazers have really stepped up for the event and we couldn’t be more excited. Check out the logo they made for the official event flyer…
