Update on West Hills skateboarding ban: Concerned neighbor speaks out

“Neither I nor anyone else in the neighborhood, as far as I know, is trying to put an end to Zoobomb. Not now, and not in the future.”
— Eric Nagle, Arlington Heights resident working to ban skateboards on SW Fairview Ave

As we shared yesterday, there’s an effort underway to ban skateboarding on the steep hills in and around Washington Park and the Arlington Heights neighborhood. I’m watching this issue closely because the roads under consideration for prohibition are also popular for people who enjoy riding bicycles downhill. I’m also interested in this issue because of the precedent it could set for how the City of Portland decides to ban certain road uses in response to neighborhood concerns.

Commissioner Randy Leonard and Arlington Heights Neighborhood resident Eric Nagle say the ban is necessary due to safety concerns. Nagle paints a dire picture of the situation. He claims skateboarders are running into cars and getting seriously hurt with increasing regularity. I have been in touch with Nagle to hear more about his side of the issue. He emailed me about it today saying, “What we’re trying to put an end to is the dangerous, crazy skateboarding that’s exploded in the neighborhood in recent years.”

Craigslist gold: “You doored me on my bike … I think I fell in love”

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

You’ve got to read this post on Craigslist. Reid Parham (@parhamr) shared it with me via Twitter:

You doored me on my bike on 6/9/12 – m4w – 29 (sw5th and Main)

Date: 2012-06-11, 8:15AM PDT

You were in a black 4 door sedan getting out of the rear right passenger door(stopped in traffic in the right lane). Me, riding my bike to work with my beard on, in the bike lane/gutter/parking lot/perfect place to get out of your car. When you swung your door open I knew I had nowhere to go because I was trapped between you and parked cars. I yelled something at you and startled you, sorry about that…

Team Profile: Jens Voigt’s Army, seriously funny

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

“If you’ve ever been at a race where someone got mad and threw their bike, we’re the opposite of that.”
— Team member Dylan Robbins (aka Admiral Longpour)

[Publisher’s note: As part of our ongoing racing coverage (made even better by our embedded racer and journalist Josh Liberles) we’ll be featuring profiles of local teams. From the super fast to the super silly, Portland is full of them! Last week we featured the Ironclad Performance Wear cycling team; now we turn our attention to the paisley platoon: Jens Voigt’s Army. — JM]

Jens Voigt (@thejensie on Twitter) is a perennial fan favorite in the European peloton known for his aggressive racing, affability and longevity – he’s 40 years old and as tough and fast as ever. Portland’s Jens Voigt’s Army cycling team has added to the legend, both via its hero-worshiping name and through a compilation of Jens Voigt’s fabulous quotes assembled into an online “soundboard” that has gone viral.
