Bike N Hike’s new ‘I am Cyclist’ video

Local shop Bike n Hike has launched a new, summer marketing campaign. The first big piece of it is a commercial titled, “I am Cyclist.”

The video was shot on location in Portland and produced by Reel Innovative. It features several characters (one of whom is a Bike N Hike employee) who share the various characteristics that make them a “cyclist.” Some of the most common biking stereotypes are represented including the roadie, the mountain biker, and the fixed gear rider. Each rider type shares a few things that makes them a “cyclist” and then proudly proclaims (with patriotic music in the background), “I am cyclist!”

This just in from the Oregon State Police (note that as of right now, there’s no evidence that another vehicle was involved in this incident):

Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Tuesday afternoon’s serious injury bicycle crash that occurred along Highway 211 near Judd Road in the Eagle Creek area [about 24 miles southeast of Portland]. The man’s name is withheld at this time pending confirmation the hospital has notified family.

On May 29, 2012 at approximately 3:20 p.m. a 60-year old southeast Portland man was found laying in the northbound lane of Highway 211 near Judd Road next to his bicycle with a head injury. Preliminary information indicates the man was riding his road bike southbound before he was found. The man was not wearing a bike helmet and received a head injury.

Responding medical personnel activated LifeFlight and the man was transported to Oregon Health & Sciences University for treatment.

There is no information or evidence that another vehicle was involved. Any witnesses are asked to contact Trooper Scott McLeod at (503) 731-3020 ext. 406.

Portland company to offer comprehensive bicycle insurance – UPDATED

Portland-based Better World Club will soon ~~be the first company in America to~~ offer affordable, comprehensive bicycle insurance*.

Better World Club Marketing Director Lauri Fish says they are just ironing out some details and expect to have the new services available in June. Fish says Better World will add the medical and liability insurance — as well as optional coverage for bike theft and property damage — onto their existing Bicycle Roadside Assistance package.

Options for comprehensive bike insurance that is similar to auto insurance has long been lacking for folks who primarily ride and for the increasing number of Americans that don’t own a car at all. (Learn more about this issue in our post, A guide to bicycle insurance options from January 2010).

Collision at NW Broadway/Glisan sends woman to the hospital

[Publisher’s Note: Normally I wouldn’t report this story. Traffic collisions happen every day and sometimes they involve a person on a bike. I don’t consider them newsworthy simply because a bicycle is involved. In this case, I decided to publish more information about this collision because of questions some readers had following a minor mention of it in The Oregonian on Saturday. — Jonathan]

A minor collision at the intersection of NW Broadway and Glisan sent a woman to the hospital on Saturday morning.

We have learned from the Portland Police Bureau that 50-year-old Alan Moditz from Ridgefield, Washington was driving a four-door Hyundai southbound on NW Broadway when a collision occurred with a bicycle being ridden by 37-year old Megan Neuman from southeast Portland.

Settlement reached in hit-and-run case involving Mt. Hood Skibowl owner

“This shows a level of negligence and disregard for other people’s lives that cannot be allowed in Portland if we want to keep our roads safe,”

Lawyers for Robert Skof, who was hit from behind by Mt. Hood Skibowl owner Kirk Hanna while bicycling in southwest Portland last year, say a settlement has been reached in the case.

On May 23rd 2011, the 45-year-old Skof, was riding on SW Macadam near the Sellwood Bridge when police say he was hit from behind after Hanna, 49, lost control of his Porsche Cayenne SUV. Hanna was going around 80 mph prior to the collision and witnesses reported that not only did he leave Skof for dead on the side of the road, he actually sped up once witnesses tried to chase him down. Three months later, Hanna pleaded guilty to misdemeanor Hit and Run, DUII, and misdemeanor Assault (many people were not pleased with those charges, so the Portland Police Bureau explained why that was the best they could do).

Skof’s lawyers, Shulman DuBois LLC, released a statement today saying that they’ve reached a settlement with Hanna. Here’s an excerpt:

SE Portland bike shop broken into last night

Broken window at A Better Cycle.

A Better Cycle, a worker owned and collectively run bike shop in Southeast Portland (2324 SE Division St.), was broken into last night.

Shop co-owner Ian Mitchell says sometime between 8:00 pm last night and 10:00 am this morning, someone threw a rock into one of the shop’s side windows and stole several bikes. Keep you eyes peeled for: Two, red Civia “Twin Cities” models with step-over frames (worth $595 each); a green, 54 cm Civia “Prospect” (worth $1195); and an all white Pure Fix fixed gear with deep-V rims and riser bars (worth $350).
