DA finds no criminal negligence in Kathryn Rickson fatality

Community gathering for Kathryn Rickson-32

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s office released a memo (PDF) today on their investigation into the death of Kathryn Rickson. They have determined that the state cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the man driving the semi-trailer truck, Dawayne Eacret, could have seen Rickson prior to the collision at SW 3rd and Madison and therefore he cannot be held criminally liable for hitting her.

Rickson suffered fatal injuries in the collision on the evening of May 16th, 2012. Eacret was in the process of turning right (south) onto SW 3rd from Madison when Rickson became pinned under the truck’s right front fender. She was transported to OHSU but died shortly after arrival.

The focus of the DA’s decision boiled down to whether or not Eacret could have seen Rickson, either on the road prior to the intersection or in his rear-view mirror prior to making his right turn. The case was investigated by Officer Pete Kurronen of the Portland Police Bureau and the lead DA was Deputy DA Glen Banfield. In addition to a detailed investigation of the vehicles and the roadway, they used three main witnesses in the case; the truck’s passenger and two people in a car that was following directly behind the truck when the collision happened.

With new products, Portland Design Works is hitting their stride

Visit to Portland Design Works-3

Company founder Erik Olson.

unless noted otherwise)

After just four years in business, Portland Design Works has made a solid name for itself in the bike industry. It was September 2008 when we first shared that a young, former general manager at Planet Bike, Erik Olson, was leaving Wisconsin to start up a new company here in Portland. Olson came here specifically to allow his endeavor to feed off our rich and vibrant bike culture. A few months later he joined forces with fellow Planet Bike co-worker Dan Powell. And the rest, as they say, is history.

From their headquarters just off the busy bikeway of N. Williams Ave, Portland Design Works has built a distinctive brand on a shoestring marketing budget. They’ve done it by doing creative projects (Circulus anyone?), by becoming part of the community, and of course by designing some very cool, distinctive and functional products.

Earlier this month I spent some time with Powell, Olson, and Sales Manager Kevin Murphy to chat about how business is going and to get a peek at their latest offerings.

PBOT set to re-stripe SW 5th near I-405 for buffered bike lanes

A short but crucial bikeway connection between downtown Portland and SW Barbur Blvd will get a bit nicer thanks to the Bureau of Transportation. PBOT announced today that they’ll begin a lane re-striping project that will re-allocate roadway space on SW 5th Ave and SW Sheridan in order to make room for bike lanes.

On SW 5th, plans call for a new, standard bike lane to be striped between 6th and Caruthers and then a buffered bike lane between Caruthers and SW Sheridan. PBOT is also set to add sharrow pavement markings on Caruthers and Sheridan between 5th and 6th.

Here’s the before…

Petals By Bike is latest bike-based business to hit Portland streets

Petals By Bike is the latest bike-based business to launch in Portland. North Portland resident Jillian Sevick debuted her business last weekend to coincide with the opening of the new Bushel and Peck bakery on NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd (between Shaver and Failing).

Sevick, who’s last job was touring with the Flaming Lips, says she’s always had an entrepreneurial spirit and, “a love for bicycles.” “I often dreamed about the endless possibilities Portland’s amazing bike culture has to offer. In today’s market, starting a business is really hard but I want to work for myself, to grow something, to share something with a community that has shared so many creative things with me.”
