ODOT set to build undercrossing for I-205 path at Division

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is set to unveil their plans to build a new undercrossing on the I-205 path at SE Division Street. An open house for the project will be held on October 9th.

According to ODOT, the new portion of the path will provide an alternative route under SE Division, in addition to the existing crossing. ODOT has also partnered with the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) and they plan to install a new, rapid-flash beacon at the existing street-grade crossing.

The new undercrossing will split from the existing path about 360 feet north of Division Street, cross under Division next to the MAX Green Line, and reconnect with the path at the north end of the Division Street MAX stop. “The new route will offer path users a non-stop connection through Division, without the need to wait for the signal at the Division Street crosswalk,” reads an ODOT statement.

The Monday Roundup

“…these data suggest that warning patients who are medically unfit to drive may reduce the risk of road crashes…”
Statement by researchers at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre

Here’s the news and other interesting stuff that caught our eyes this past week…

– Local Portland businessman Chris King recently visited the White House to talk about the current state of domestic manufacturing.

– The Atlantic Cities shares the story of Em Baker, who is riding across the country with two friends to bring attention to “pointless bike deaths.”

– Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood probably should go back and check his numbers after he misquoted a statistic about pedestrian injuries by blaming 80% of victims in fatal accidents involving someone walking across a street.

Police investigating fatal collision at SE 148th and Mill – Updated

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

The Portland Police Bureau just reported a fatal collision involving a man riding a bicycle and someone driving a car.

The collision occurred at SE 148th and Mill in the Centennial Neighborhood around 9:00 pm tonight (9/30). The intersection is slated for a traffic signal as per plans by the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) to create a neighborhood greenway on SE Mill. Currently it’s slated for completion in 2015.

No additional details are available right now; but the PPB has launched an investigation and I’ll update this post as I learn more. If you saw anything or have information to share, please call the Portland Police non-emergency line at (503) 823-3333.

UPDATE: KATU News has posted a photo from the scene (not graphic).

UPDATE, 11:30 am 10/2: The PPB still hasn’t released many more details. Below is what I have just heard from Traffic Division Capt. David Hendrie:

“We had five major crash team callouts in 48 hours over the weekend so it has been hectic… the rider was riding on the sidewalk and rode in front of the car that was turning left onto Mill. The investigator is still reviewing the evidence from the crash. The driver of the vehicle was not impaired and there is no indication she could have avoided the collision. It will be some time before we know more.”

UPDATE, 1:45 pm, 10/2: I just posted a full update here.
