‘It’s not called ‘Coast”: Zed Bailey on bringing new energy to Shift, starting tonight

Zed Bailey

Open Bike Night in January.

Zed Bailey doesn’t know if anyone will show up to Velo Cult tonight to talk about the future of bike fun in Portland. He doesn’t know because he didn’t put the event on Facebook.

Instead, tapping the low-tech xerocracy that drove bike-fun events in Portland ten years ago, he photocopied a bunch of neatly designed flyers for “Shift 3rd Wednesdays” from July through December and handed them out at PedalPalooza rides.

It was an invitation for more people who like bikes to get involved with Shift, the loose team of volunteer bike lovers responsible for Portland’s monthly Midnight Mystery Ride, for Breakfast on the Bridges, for PedalPalooza and, in many ways, for putting Portland’s bike scene on the map. It’s a ten-year-old organization in need, many of its organizers say, of a burst of new energy and direction — a burst of energy that Bailey says he’ll be working to create as its new facilitator, starting tonight.

Today: Islabikes Open House and Rider Appreciation Day on Williams

visit to Islabikes-13

Get an inside look at Islabikes at their open house today.

There are two events today you won’t want to miss (actually three, but we’ll share the third one in a separate post later today).

Islabikes, the UK-based purveyor of fine children’s bicycles is hosting an Open House event at their new store in southeast Portland (which we visited back in May). Islabikes established their North American headquarters at SE 7th and Lincoln in March and they’ve found a healthy business niche so far.

Islabikes North American GM Tim Goodall will open up his shop for a day of fun (a unicycling juggler), sweet treats (“farm fresh ice cream” from Salt & Straw) and test rides. The founder of the company, noted bicycle designer Isla Rowntree, will also be in attendance.

Carnage updates: Sun glare on 142nd, new crosswalks on SE 17th & more

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Should you be allowed to drive into this?
(Photo © J. Maus/BikePortland)

As many people seemed to notice, last week was particularly thick with serious on-street collisions. We’re continuing to track relevant parts of several cases. Here’s the latest on four of them.

No criminal charge from SE Division and 148th: As KOIN reported yesterday, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s office has declined to seek criminal penalties in the case of Neftali Cabrera-Escobar, 36, whose car struck and killed Brian Francis Kenny, 62, in April. The reason is that the DA determined that sun glare made it physically impossible for Cabrera-Escobar to have seen Kenny, and therefore that Cabrera-Escobar wouldn’t be found guilty of a crime.

He did receive a traffic citation for careless driving resulting in the death of a vulnerable road user and remains liable for civil penalties.

It may seem strange that it’s not illegal to drive a car at potentially fatal speed even when it’s physically impossible to see where you’re going. So we talked to Senior Deputy District Attorney Kirsten Snowden to discuss the law.

Milwaukie Mayor Jeremy Ferguson joins community ride Sunday

Bike Milwaukie, a community group in Portland’s inner southern suburb, has been holding 12 to 13 rides a year since it formed in 2011 and is ready for a minor milestone: Milwaukie Mayor Jeremy Ferguson plans to join the ride this Sunday.

Ferguson, whose day job is supervising operations at Portland Streetcar, has served since 2009 and was reelected to a full four-year term in 2010. He’s been a successful proponent of extending TriMet’s Orange Line to central Milwaukie, which he aims to enrich with more human traffic.
