Wednesday Video Roundup: 1970s bike safety, local high-fives, and a touring-oriented fatbike

Posted on May 3rd, 2016 at 7:12 pm.

Welcome to this week’s roundup! Let’s start with a great success- New Yorkers are happy that the protected Pulaski Bridge Bike Path is open (see it on a map). It was done by reclaiming a lane from cars. The video above, from Streetfilms, shows the path and reactions to it.

Welcome to this week’s roundup! Our first video (above) shows current research into reusing front derailleurs now that the 1X systems are gaining in popularity. What’s your favorite reuse of this component?

Wednesday Video Roundup: Tall bike touring, the ‘Grey Escape’, Paris-Roubaix & more

Posted on April 20th, 2016 at 8:00 pm.

Welcome to this week’s roundup! Our first video (above) is a great 10-minute trailer about the Tall Bike Tour and fringe society. It’s somehow related to The Winking Circle (artsy straightedgers?) near Toronto. In any case, the trailer is really interesting even as a standalone piece.

Wednesday Video Roundup: bridge pedaling, test bikes, and bamboo bikes

Posted on April 6th, 2016 at 8:18 am.

Welcome to this week’s roundup! This past weekend was the Emerald City Bike Ride in Seattle. It’s the first year, and the highlights were riding across the new Hwy 520 floating bridge and then going down the I-5 express lanes. It had a similar surreal feeling as riding over the Fremont Bridge during our city’s Bridge Pedal event. Above is my short highlights video; another interesting view was from the rider who was first out and got to set the KOM across the bridge and then again on the express lanes.

Wednesday Video Roundup: pro-bike rant, DIY cargo bike on tour, and more

Posted on March 23rd, 2016 at 1:46 pm.

Welcome to this week’s roundup! I considered skipping the week because I’m in a funk over the recent violence in Portland and around the world. Perhaps a diversion would be nice. If not, skip this, I understand.

Our first video (above) is a promo from Travel Oregon. They made about six short promotional videos, this one has a bike in it.

Wednesday Video Roundup: a safe-walking superhero, pursuing ostrich, and more

Posted on March 16th, 2016 at 10:21 am.

Welcome to this week’s roundup! Our first video (above) shows a cool way to make walking safer: by being a Lucha Libre style superhero. It’s sad it takes this level of absurdity to make a crossing safe, but it still feels like progress. (h/t m.a.)

Posted on March 9th, 2016 at 12:43 pm.

Welcome to this week’s roundup! Our first video (above) is an explanation about how Filmed By Bike works and how it helps the cycling community. I love the style of this- there’s enough information and also enough entertainment to keep it interesting.

Wednesday video roundup: icy racing, Dutch filmmaking, and a dirty bike commute

Posted on March 2nd, 2016 at 8:12 am.

Welcome to this week’s roundup! We’re starting with a trailer (above) for “Cheetah”, a documentary about Nelson Vails, who was a pro cyclist in the 1980s- and is black. That was rare and pioneering for that generation (see also: Major Taylor from an earlier generation), so he is an inspirational figure to many.

Wednesday Video Roundup: riding in Portland, Switzerland, Korea and more

Welcome to this week’s roundup! We have a lot of dirt riding videos this week, but first we’ll start with a simple short documentary (above) about Damian Riehl, a bike messenger/photographer here in Portland. It’s a promo video for Chrome, but it’s a nice slice of life. Here’s his instagram account.

Wednesday Video Roundup: Pikes Peak, bike lanes in Berlin, and more

Posted on February 17th, 2016 at 9:21 pm.

Welcome to this week’s roundup! We’re starting with my favorite video (so far) that I’ve posted. This is a great little documentary about a bike shop in Amsterdam. There are many great quotes (“without a bike, you’re nowhere in Amsterdam”) and sweet moments. I love seeing all the “working bikes”.
