Job Title:

Reporter / Staff Writer

Company / Organization

BikePortland/Pedaltown Media Inc.

Job Description

BikePortland is looking for a multi-faceted journalist who’s ready to hit the ground running. We’ve been publishing news about cycling, transportation and street culture daily since 2005 and have recently garnered an equity investment to grow our operation. (Note: BikePortland is a private news company, not a nonprofit organization.) We need a reporter who can develop and write stories on a wide variety of topics. We cover all things bicycling, as well as transit, housing, climate change, micromobility, local/regional politics, national trends, social issues related to mobility, new products, urban planning, and so on. You’ll work closely with BikePortland editor, founder and publisher Jonathan Maus.

About BikePortland: BikePortland is a private news corporation (majority-owned by Pedaltown Media, Inc.) that has been posting news and views daily since 2005. Our team currently consists of one full-time employee (co-owner and founder Jonathan Maus), one half-time contractor and a small core of contributing writers. We are funded by subscribers, advertisers, and an investor. BikePortland has been named Best Portland Blog by Willamette Week (2016 and 2017) and we have won two awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, including a First Place for General News Reporting.

Successful candidates will:
– Have experience meeting deadlines
– Have demonstrated news writing skills
– Have a solid grasp on transportation policy
– Be able to develop sources and story leads
– Write stories for our main website, bikeportland.org, and for social media platforms
– Take photographs to accompany stories when necessary
– Be proficient using WordPress

We’d love to find someone who can also:
– Tell stories with audio and/or video (we have a weekly podcast and YouTube channel)

Compensation: This is a contract position that pays $3,000 every four weeks with an expectation of 25 hours per week.

How to Apply:

Please send an introductory email to maus.jonathan@gmail.com with 3-5 recent writing samples and explain why you want this job and why you’d be great at it. We especially encourage people of color, LGTBQ+ and women to apply.
