Five rides before Friday: Bike bells, Pittsburgh longings and more

queerest ride

Organizer-provided art for the Queerest Bike Ride
of the Year (Thursday).

Welcome to the first of a series we’ll be running for the next three Mondays: a roundup of weekday rides in the Pedalpalooza bike festival that you might have overlooked but shouldn’t.

Rust Belt Ride
Tuesday, 6 p.m.
SE Eastbank Esplanade and Main Street (Vera Katz statue)
“Calling all yinzers! Join me on a casually-paced ride to a few Portland places that remind me of Pittsburgh.”

Bike Bell Ensemble
Thursday, noon meet / 12:10 ride
NW Naito Parkway and Couch (Japanese American Historical Plaza)
“A short lunch-hour ride down the waterfront. … Plan for rhythmic improvisation, silliness, and lots of ringing.”

Green Loop Scavenger Hunt
Thursday, 5:30 p.m.
SW Naito and Salmon (Salmon Street Fountain)
The Green Loop is a big idea for new public space in central Portland. The Young Professionals in Transportation group is organizing a team-based scavenger hunt game to explore its possibilities.

Queerest Bike Ride of the Year!
Thursday, 6 p.m. meet / 7 p.m. ride
SW Park and Madison (in front of Art Museum)
“Bring your queerest bike, self, friend.” Show up at 6 to “queer” your bike if it isn’t already.

Bike Play: Adventures in Babysitting
Thursday, 6:30 p.m. meet / 7 p.m. ride
1050 SE Clinton St.
The Bike Play, produced each year by the Working Theater Collective, is a rolling encounter in which theater can come at you from any direction. It’s one of the priceless gems of Pedalpalooza. This year they’re reimagining the cult-classic 80s film Adventures in Babysitting, and the first performance of four is on Thursday. It would not be wise to miss it.

Correction 6/14: An earlier version of this post got a bunch of details wrong for some reason. Sorry about that. We’re blaming jetlag.

Any guesses as to how many were on the Bowie/Prince ride? I could go but they came down my street, and it seemed like it wouldn’t end. Very fun spectacle.

I heard someone at the ride say at least 3,000.

The Bike Bell Ensemble meetup point on the Pedalpalooza site is listed as Japanese American Historical Plaza, NW Naito Pkwy and NW Couch. Also, the Queerest ride is listed on Thursday. Which is correct?
