6/25: Hello readers and friends. I recently had my second (of two) total knee replacement surgeries so I'll be out of commission for a bit while I recover. Please be patient while I get back to full health. I hope to be back to posting as soon as I can. I look forward to getting back out there. 🙏. - Jonathan Maus, BikePortland Publisher and Editor

In addition to maps and route details for each of the five events, PBOT also shared today that local bike shop Universal Cycles has stepped up as a major sponsor. Universal does a large online business and back in May they moved to a new retail store adjacent to the SE Ankeny bike boulevard.

Calling all road-race-curious: Banana Belt Series starts Sunday

Early season road racing is upon us in Portland, and right on cue the Banana Belt Series of circuit races around Hagg Lake starts this Sunday. The 11-mile lap challenges racers’ late-winter fitness as the different categories complete from two to seven loops.

The event has historically proven popular among those looking to give racing a try for the first time.

David Hart of Wenzel Coaching is helping to organize a free clinic for beginners (Cat 5 men and Cat 4/5 women) on Sunday, March 4th. It’s the second year the company has selected the kickoff race to entice new Oregon racers. “We felt that most racers pick this race as their first of the season. We saw an opportunity to be available to those racers who might be a little gun shy and want a little extra advice before the event,” Hart tells BikePortland. “The race is also close to Portland, so we knew there would be a higher interest in the clinic.”

ODOT inspections will close Steel Bridge lower deck next week

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Traffic Advisory from ODOT:

Inspections close freeway ramps and bike/ped trail

Routine inspections planned for March 5-12 on the Fremont and Steel Bridges

A contractor for ODOT plans to inspect the six east Fremont Bridge approaches (Interstate 405/Interstate 5 interchanges) and the Steel Bridge from Sunday, March 5, through Sunday, March 12. Inspections will close ramps from the I-405 and I-5 interchanges on the Fremont Bridge, the bicycle and pedestrian path on the lower deck of the Steel Bridge and the upper deck of the Steel Bridge for two nights…

The work will require intermittent single-lane and ramp closures to allow crews to safely use snooper trucks, bucket trucks, aerial lift platforms and ladders. Only one ramp will close at a time. During the ramp closures, drivers will follow a signed detour. The work will take place each night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

On both decks of the Fremont Bridge/I-405 from milepost 3.52 to 3.88
Steel Bridge bike and pedestrian path and upper deck closures

Inspections of the lower deck of the Steel Bridge require closing the lower deck and bicycle and pedestrian path Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Path users may use the upper deck during the path closures or use another bridge to cross the Willamette River.

The inspection work will close the upper deck of the Steel Bridge to all traffic on Saturday, March 11 and Sunday, March 12, from 1:50 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. During these closures motorists can use the Burnside, Morrison or Broadway Bridges.

Inspections of the Fremont and Steel Bridges are routine and take place every two years.
