Portlander triumphs at grueling Trans Iowa endurance race
(Photos: Ellee Thalheimer)
Months ago, scores of endurance racing enthusiasts jumped at the chance to snag one of the 100 slots at the eighth annual Trans Iowa endurance race. When it started on Saturday, only 75-80 people actually showed up. When it was over, only 19 of them managed to finish.
One of those finishers was Portlander Joe Partridge. Joe finished in second place in the single-speed category mostly because he’s totally badass. I’m partial though. He’s my husband.
Last weekend I went to Grinnell, Iowa to witness and support Joe and his friend Dan Jansen as they attempted this grueling, 330-mile gravel road race.
The Trans Iowa physically and mentally breaks down most of its participants each year, leaving very few finishers. Time cutoffs require riders to average 10 mph the whole race, support people are restricted from the course, and riders are completely self-supported, only resupplied with gnarly vittles from rural convenience stores.

For Jeff Bernards, e-assist saved cycling
Chronic foot pain threatened to make cycling unbearable for 56-year old southeast Portland resident Jeff Bernards. Now, after installing an electric-assist kit on his bike, he’s riding again. And loving it.
Bernards is a veteran of local bike events. Years ago he started the “Get Lit” program to give out free bike lights to those in need (the program has since been taken over by the Community Cycling Center). He also loves leading bike tours. He’s taken a group of Portlanders on a three week bike tour in Death Valley, California and he’s led numerous overnight bike trips to Oxbow Park. More recently, Bernards has worked tirelessly to get a ban on studded tires on the Oregon ballot.

Reader Story: How I survived auto amputation
(Photo: Allison Sliter)
[This story was submitted by BikePortland reader Allison Sliter.]
A couple years back I lost some weight. A lot of weight, actually. I lost about 1500 lbs when my 1980 Honda Accord was donated to NPR.
I had been dabbling in the carfree lifestyle for years. Leaving my car to sit on the curb for days, even weeks at a time. I paid to park it in front of my own house. I paid to insure it against crashes I couldn’t have while it sat there. My husband has never even had a driver’s license and although he appreciated having a driver in the house, he wanted me to be carfree, too. So, I knew I’d eventually get rid of it, but I kept putting it off. Then, during a Fall pledge drive on OPB (Portland’s NPR affiliate station), I just did it. It was October. I hadn’t been on my bike for more than 10 miles in the last month. If I had done it in June, my zealotry would have faded by the time the fall rain set in.
By starting in October, it may have been cold and wet and rainy, but I had fresh self-righteousness to keep me warm.
Former Bogota mayor Enrique Peñalosa to speak in Portland
(Photo: Wikipedia)
Former mayor of Bogota Colombia, Enrique Peñalosa, will be in Portland for a special event on May 14th. Peñalosa is revered in urban planning circles for his pioneering role in the ciclovia movement (which inspired Portland’s Sunday Parkways), his development of bus rapid transit, and his role in re-shaping Bogota’s streets to prioritize people over cars.
Peñalosa’s brother, Gil, who was the minister of sport and recreation during his brother’s administration, gave the keynote at the 2008 Towards Carfree Cities Conference that was held in Portland.
Enrique has been invited by the Urban Planning Club at Portland State University and he will speak at The Amory in downtown Portland. (There are a very limited amount of free tickets available. Email upcevents[at]gmail[dot]com for more info.)
