In new video, Portland Design Works shows ‘Community Works’

It’s rare that I’ll give Front Page space to a company’s in-house promo video; but I love the latest one from Portland Design Works.

The new video by talented filmmaker James Wilson (who has done loads of great work for local bike causes and companies), documents a few of PDW’s recent forays into community service. As you might recall from coverage here on BikePortland, PDW gave the new Ventura Pump Track a big financial boost and they also funded and hosted the very fun Rider Appreciation Day (RAD) on North Williams Avenue. The video also features company co-owner Dan Powell making PB&Js for participants in the weekly MTB Short Track races out at Portland International Raceway.

‘Community Works’ is a great tagline too because it gets at the heart of what’s going on here in Portland. Behind the cold calculations of ridership statistics, budgets, politics, and projects lies a very supportive community of people working together to make bicycling better. Dan and Erik Olson (the other PDW owner) epitomize that community. They moved here from Wisconsin four years ago with big dreams to build a bike company. Now they find themselves smack dab in the middle of the community, participating in the very thing that brought them here to begin with. And it’s story I’ve heard and seen play out numerous times in the past few years.

The City of Portland’s official slogan is “The city that works.” I think “Community works” is much more inspiring and powerful. Nice job guys.

Murph with a megaphone is a dangerous and scary thing.

I’ve also recently moved to Portland (bringing my tax dollars and volunteerism with me) specifically because of bicycles, walkability, public transit and the wonderful, wonderful sense of community here. I didn’t realize Portland Design Works was such a new company until reading this. They have certainly done an amazing job of giving back to their new hometown PLUS they sell some really great products. Congrats to PDW and Thank You for all that you do!
