Also the original air valve stem caps that were black and diamond shape were still on it. The back reflector was broke off a little and there was mounting hardware for a bike computer as well as a front light. Wanted: Your stories

Hi everyone. Remember back in April when I put out the call for reader story submissions? It went really well. People responded with some very interesting perspectives on a range of issues from tragedy to “auto amputation” to a philosophical take on the separated vs. shared space debate.

If you missed out on that chance to have your story published, I’m opening the site up to submissions once again. (I’ll be out of town for the rest of July starting later today. I’ll still be publishing stories, but won’t be working full time). I’m looking for pretty much anything, as long as it has to do with bikes and it has some connection to the Portland region.

PSU research delves deeper into ‘Four types of cyclists’

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Roger Geller’s chart that started it all.

It’s been six-and-a-half years since Portland Bureau of Transportation bicycle coordinator Roger Geller first defined the “Four types of cyclists”. Geller’s insights proved to be groundbreaking and his definitions have stood the test of time. I frequently hear references about the need to attract more “Interested but concerned” riders at conferences all over the country and I read about them in articles in media large and small.

Now a noted bicycle researcher at Portland State University, Jennifer Dill, is working to learn more about the various types of riders. At the recent Velo-City conference in Vancouver B.C., she shared her research, Categorizing Cyclists: What Do We Know? Insights from Portland, OR (PDF). Now her work has been made public.

Follow up: Bike accident/liability insurance now available for purchase

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

At the end of May, we shared the news that Portland-based Better World Club was on the verge of offering comprehensive insurance for people who ride bicycles. Earlier this month they made it official: the new “BIKEon” insurance product is being billed as the, “first nationwide, comprehensive, and affordable accident and liability insurance for bicyclists.”

Here’s more from a company press release:

“The nation’s bicycle community is growing rapidly, and as more cyclists share the road with cars, trucks and other cyclists, there is greater likelihood of an accident. As a result, the demand for bicycle insurance has never been higher.”

Bigwigs set to roll on 8th annual ‘Policymakers Ride’

Policymakers Ride-39

In 2010, the ride showed regional officials
just how bad the Interstate Bridge is for bikes.
(Photo © J. Maus/BikePortland)

In the spirit of the ancient proverb: “Tell me and I forget; show me and I remember; involve me and I understand,” on Friday, dozens of Oregon and Southwest Washington’s most prominent politicians and powerful bureaucrats will hop on bikes for the eighth annual “Policymakers Ride.”

The invite-only ride, hatched in 2005 by staffers from Metro and Cycle Oregon, has grown considerably over the years. Its intent is simple: Instead of testifying to them at public meetings and writing them letters, get key decision makers onto a bike and show them the good, bad, and ugly of our regional bikeway and trail network (or what Metro calls “the Intertwine“.)

Summer camp teaches next generation of trail riders, stewards

(Photos: Dan Kaufman/CrankMyChain! CycleTV)

The Northwest Trail Alliance recently wrapped up their first ever kids summer camp last week. The Portland-based non-profit teamed up with lots of local and national partners to put 20 kids on bikes (donated by the Bureau of Transportation) for the three-day camp to learn all the essential skills of off-road riding — including how to take care of trails and riding areas.

The kids ventured from the Ventura Park Pump Track and Powell Butte Nature Park in Portland, to the budding trail system that’s emerged at Sandy Ridge and Cascade Locks (in the Columbia River Gorge).

NWTA’s director of advocacy, Tom Archer called the camp a “huge success.”
