In case you haven’t heard, there’s a battle royale going on in the U.S. Congress over the transportation bill right now. Members of the House and Senate are in negotiations to come up with some sort of agreement about how to actually pass a bill, instead of just extending the current one for the umpteenth time.

Included in these high-level talks are, once again, threats to change how cities and states fund projects that improve biking and walking. House Republicans and some Senators say they want to take away local control over spending on key programs like Safe Routes to School, Transportation Enhancements and Recreational Trails.

Suffice it to say, League of American Bicyclists president Andy Clarke isn’t taking it well. He’s pressing California Senator Barbara Boxer to reject the Republicans’ “small-minded and vindictive attacks” against bicycling and keep her promise to maintain these programs and retain local control over them. In a blog post this week, Clarke listed his top 10 reasons why Congress should not mess with biking and walking programs.

NW Trail Alliance teams with Portland Parks & Rec for kids MTB camp

For the first time ever, the City of Portland Parks & Recreation bureau will team up with local off-road cycling non-profit Northwest Trail Alliance to hold a kids mountain biking camp.

“Whether you want to become a mountain bike pro or are just checking out the sport for the first time,” reads the camp description, “this 4-day camp will give you the hands-on experience you need to safely shred on your bike.” The collaboration with Portland Parks is a great match, says NWTA’s Director of Advocacy Tom Archer. The City provides the platform for the camp through their summer teen program, and the non-profit brings quality instruction and insider knowledge about the best local riding spots.

PPB arrest motorcycle operator for I-205 bike path collision

Last night at just after 1:30 am I got a phone call about a “weird occurrence” on the on I-205 multi-use path just north of NE Glisan St on-ramp (map).

It turns out that someone on a motorcycle heading northbound somehow managed to end up on the adjacent path and struck a man who was riding his bike. Both people went to the hospital with what are being reported as non-serious injuries.

In that location, the I-205 path is only separated from the on-ramp by a concrete barrier wall (see aerial photo below). While bicycling through this intersection, I’ve often lamented at how awkward and unpleasant it is. It’s not clear how this actually happened. The police have yet to release a statement about it.
