Job of the Week

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Just one job this week; but it’s a good one. The Bike Commuter, a great neighborhood bike shop in Sellwood (right on the bike route too), is looking for a bike mechanic. Check out the listing below to see if you fit the bill, and if you apply, tell them you heard about it through BikePortland.

‘Carmageddon’ in L.A.

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

In case you haven’t heard, a 10-mile stretch of I-405 in of Los Angeles — one of the busiest freeways in the country — is set to close Friday through Monday. The project has transcended transportation and has become a spectacle before it has even started. Dubbed “Carmageddon,” it is dominating headlines throughout the area as people brace for unknown consequences of having a main traffic artery completely cut off for 53 hours (unfortunately, the LAPD squashed hopes for big block parties, parades, and bike rides on the freeway during the closure).

For those of you interested in transportation culture, this is a fascinating case study.

PBOT announces location of first distracted driving enforcement action

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

The City of Portland has announced the first location for enhanced enforcement of distracted driving. PBOT will work with the Portland Police Bureau to conduct an “enforcement mission” at the intersection of SW Barbur Boulevard, SW Taylors Ferry Road, and SW 41st Avenue this coming Wednesday (7/20).

The effort is part of the “StreetSmart: Go Safe” campaign, that PBOT launched last month.

PBOT data shows that this intersection is a high-crash location. It was also selected because of citizen complaints of motor vehicle operators disobeying the “No Turn on Red” and driving in bike lanes to maneuver around stopped cars.

field for active transportation.

As I reported on Tuesday, a major organizational shift is taking shape at the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). For the first time ever, ODOT will have an official Active Transportation “section” within the agency.

ODOT Director Matt Garrett made the announcement yesterday via an internal email, saying it was one of the agency’s “first steps to pursue a more multimodal vision.”

Not unexpectedly, reactions to the news were mixed. Those close to ODOT (staff, advisory committee members, and so on) are excited about the announcement, while those on the outside looking in (advocates, citizen activists, city staff), are skeptical.
