Bunny on a Bike ride

Bunny on a Bike Ride 2006.

It’s a reflective day here at BikePortland. Six years ago today I launched this site, breaking away from OregonLive.com and the “Bike Fun” blog I started there in April 2005.

11,604 posts and over 150,000 comments later, and I’m still here writing about all things bike every weekday. When I started, I think many people in the community figured I would burn out. I can’t blame people for thinking that. I poured my heart and soul into this site for years, sacrificing a lot of other important things in my life, just to build the foundation I have today.

And I’m glad I did.

Portlander looks to Kickstarter to fund bike turn signal idea

The YouTurn

One glaring way that bicycles lack the same presence on the roadway as cars is in their lack of adequate lighting systems. In particular, bicycles don’t come equipped with one of the most basic and important lights that cars have — turn signals.

Portlander Jack O’Neal hopes to change that.

O’Neal, 32, is an Afghanistan war veteran who is currently attending Portland State University to get a degree in mechanical engineering. He has developed a cycling accessory called “YouTurn,” which fits on your hand and automatically displays a large yellow arrow in the direction you want to turn. The device is motion-activated (it uses technology from smartphones) and works when the rider puts out their hand to signal a turn.

My thoughts on The Skanner’s N Williams editorial

The Skanner

Bernie Foster, the Publisher of The Skanner — Portland’s award-winning and self-described, “African American newspaper that keeps you up to date with everything going on in the black community” — has weighed in on the North Williams Avenue project.

In his editorial, Foster urges his readers to speak up on this and other transportation projects; but he also, in my opinion, unfairly criticizes PBOT and BikePortland in a way that hinders community relations.

Crosswalks in action-1

Oregon law says vehicles must “stop
and stay stopped” when crosswalks
are in use.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation announced the location of their next crosswalk enforcement action last night. On August 23rd, PBOT and the Police Bureau will focus their efforts on the intersection of N. Williams and Morris.

Morris is a marked crosswalk and the PPB will be on high alert for anyone who fails to “stop and remain stopped” (as per ORS 811.028) when someone is in the crosswalk or attempting to cross the street.

Unlike previous enforcement actions, the PPB will conduct the mission during the evening rush hour at 5:30 pm. Typically, the missions are done during midday.

Rather than using carbon fiber to replicate wheel components originally made of metal, what if wheel design was optimized to realize the maximum potential of carbon fiber? Why choose between aerodynamics, strength and weight savings when you can have it all?

The revolutionary Mad Fiber Wheelset eliminates the compromise from performance wheel selection. Representatives from Mad Fiber will be there to answer all of your questions. See our calendar for more details on this and other Western Bikeworks events.

Mayor Adams weighs in on Williams Ave project

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

“… if the community doesn’t have the power to choose a solution, it doesn’t matter how good the solution is… To empower the community and find a way forward, I pledge that my staff and the Portland Bureau of Transportation staff will support you and work with all stakeholders to make progress.”
— Mayor Sam Adams

As PBOT’s North Williams Traffic Safety Operations Project has evolved from just a small transportation project into a full-blown, community-wide discussion about gentrification and community power (or lack of it) in the decision-making process, Portland Mayor Sam Adams decided it was time to weigh in.

In a letter sent out yesterday to the project’s 18-member Stakeholder Advisory Committee, Adams addressed the many sensitive topics that this process has brought to the fore. I am working on a recap of an important meeting that took place last night. In the meantime, I’ve posted Adams’ letter below:
