Over the years, I’ve photographed many of Portland’s unique tall bikes and the wonderful people who ride them. I dove into the BikePortland photo archives and pulled out some of my favorites…

Caleb Pruitt posts bail, awaits trial in Angela Burke fatality

Caleb Pruitt, the man charged with manslaughter for his involvement in the fatal collision that took the life of Angela Burke as she attempted to cross SW Barbur Blvd on December 15th, has posted bail and is currently on house arrest at his family home in Hood River.
Pruitt was initially charged with Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants and Criminally Negligent Homicide, but after Portland Police investigators and the Multnomah County DA’s office learned more about what happened that night, they upped the charges to include Manslaughter — a crime with a minimum prison sentence of 75 months.
Kitzhaber mum on transportation: Will he make a change atop ODOT?
Oregon’s newly elected Governor John Kitzhaber has made a many staff appointments in his first month in office. He’s named people to help him develop policy on issues like energy policy, business development, job creation, health care, affirmative action, and other issues. But there’s one issue where Kitzhaber has been glaringly silent — transportation.
And, while our state faces much more serious issues, there’s not shortage of action around transportation right now.
In the 2009 legislative session, former Governor Kulongoski passed the Jobs and Transportation Act that included over $800 million in earmarks for road projects across the state (some of which are already moving forward). ODOT — whose 2007-2009 budget was about $3.4 billion — received federal stimulus funding for over 200 projects — with about 100 of them completed and 40 still under construction.

Vancouver Avenue Bridge project delayed until end of February
A project to repair and rebuild the Vancouver Avenue Bridge in North Portland has been delayed and isn’t expected to be completed until the end of February. The bridge — which crosses the Columbia Slough just west of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd — is an important north-south connection; and even though a detour is available, the routes are not as convenient or safe for people using bicycles.
Bicycle Rights! Watch the new clip from Portlandia

-Watch clip below-
Portlandia is the new, six-part IFC miniseries that’s getting a lot of buzz around these parts for its attempts to poke fun at Portland’s idiosyncrasies. Back before the holidays, we shared a bit about it over on Page Two because, as you might expect, bicycling figures prominently into the show.
Now, in a newly released teaser clip titled Bicycle Rights!, Portlandia’s co-lead actor Fred Armisen gives us a taste of how they’ll handle the subject…

PBOT, advocates prep for 50s Bikeway project open house

bike lanes and removal of parking on both sides of
SE 52nd north of Woodstock.
One year ago today, the City of Portland Bureau of Transportation accepted a $1.3 million grant to build the 50s Bikeway project. That grant came 13 years after the project — a 4.5 mile north-south bikeway along the 52nd Avenue corridor — was first envisioned by PBOT.
On Wednesday night (1/26), the public will get their first opportunity to see PBOT’s plans for the project at an open house in the Woodstock neighborhood. According to drafts of the proposed plan developed by PBOT and a Citizen’s Advisory Committee (CAC), the 50s Bikeway could come with significant transportation changes along the corridor.
