Stolen From: The bike was stolen off of my front porch on Northeast Tillamook between MLK and NE 7th Ave. I think it happened today, but the last time I saw my bike FOR SURE was yesterday, the morning of 1/31/11.
Neighborhood: NorthEast – Eliot
Owner: Zachary Dunham
OwnerEmail: zach.dunham@gmail.com
Reward: $75
Description: At 7:05 this evening, I realized that my bike was no longer in its usual place – locked up on my front porch – and that in all likelihood, it has been stolen.

It’s an all black 2009 Kona (Dew Drop model) that I purchased new at the beginning of 2010 from Sellwood Cycles – I’ll be contacting them to update this entry with the serial number and other information regarding the bike specs.

The bike was all black with black grip tape, disc brakes, a chain that was badly in need of grease, 18 or 21 (can’t remember) speeds, a small black bell on the right side of the drop handlebars, and mounts for a front and back light (both "Cat Eye" products).

The back tire was completely flat, and the outside of the right pedal was noticeably chipped due to a recent crash. The right brake/gearshift was yanked partially out of wack during that same crash, so the brakes are a little tighter on the right side.

Everything else was stock issue on the bike – I’ll try to think of more details, but that’s all I’ve got at the moment.

Thanks very much for any help that you can provide. Please call me at (206) 419-8210 if you have any information.

I’m happy to announce that thanks to the sponsorship of United Bicycle Institute, I’ll be traveling to Austin, TX for the 2011 North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS) next month.

It’s been four years since I headed down to San Jose for the show and three years since it stopped in Portland back in 2008. I’ve never been to Austin (or Texas for that matter), and I’m real excited to check it out.

Bike traffic signals on the
agenda in Salem today.
(Photo © J. Maus)

The Oregon State Legislature is getting down to business this week and there’s a bike-related bill that’s already getting some action. Senate Bill 130 (text) would add green, yellow and red bicycle signals to Oregon’s list of officially accepted traffic control devices. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is behind the bill and it’s being supported by the City of Portland, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, and others.

Peter Koonce, Signals and Street Lighting Division Manager for the City of Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is in Salem today to testify in support of the bill at a work session of the Senate Committee on Business, Transportation and Economic Development.

I caught up with Koonce this morning to find out more about what’s in the bill and what’s at stake for bicycling.

Riverfront condo owners urge bike traffic to avoid their property – UPDATED

Entrance to The Strand’s private property
(looking north from SW Moody).

Residents of the The Strand, a three-tower condominium complex on the Willamette riverfront south of the Hawthorne Bridge, want people on bikes to avoid riding through their private property. Their condo towers face an open courtyard that makes for a tempting cut-through for bicycle traffic. Signs say “Do Not Enter,” but residents of The Strand say people on bikes frequently ride through the plaza, often at high speeds and without consideration for others.

How PSU is getting staff and students to leave their cars at home

Over 2,000 bike parking spots are just
one reason it’s easy to ride to PSU.

Portland State University’s location, facilities, and policies to promote options to driving alone are paying off. A survey released last week shows that three in four students and employees at the campus get there without a car. A press release about the survey issued by PSU proclaimed that, “Cars are alternative transportation for students and staff at PSU.”

Our regional transit agency, TriMet, is a national leader at data-sharing and they embrace open-source tools. One such tool that they’ve recently added to their App Center is the nifty Portland Bike to Transit Map.

According to the map’s creator, Melelani Sax-Barnett, “It can display bike routes, transit stops, and transit routes at the same time, so you can find the best way to bike to your transit stop.”
