About a week ago, new signs appeared on a popular dirt trail in Mt. Tabor Park that read, “No Bicycles Please.”
The new signs are on what’s known as the ‘Green Trail’ in the northern section of the park. The trail connects via Salmon Street and goes around the playground and amphitheater.
We heard about the signs from readers and we were also pointed to a thread in the MTBR.com forums about the issue. In a city like Portland, where singletrack is rare, any narrow dirt trails accessible to bikes are coveted. On the MTBR forums there was disappointment at the signs and confusion over whether or not they were legitimate.
Turns out they are.
Thanks to a group of devoted volunteers working on a shoestring budget so that 10,000 people can enjoy a naked bike ride through the streets (not to mention all the people who enjoy it without even being there or participating), the Portland edition of the 2011 World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) is all set for June 18th.
Behold the poster (might be NSFW, depending on where you work)…

The floating portion of the Eastbank Esplanade closed due to high water on the Willamette River eight days ago (May 31st). According to an update from Portland Parks & Recreation, since river levels look to remain high “for the foreseeable future” it will, “likely be close to a week” before they will reopen the Esplanade.
PP&R spokesman Mark Ross told us this morning that floating portion of the Esplanade between the Steel and Burnside bridges will remain closed until the river reaches the 16 foot mark. According to data from the National Weather Service, the Willamette River hasn’t been at 16 feet since May 28th. At 8:30 am today, the level was measured at 16.62 feet:
Mapnificent is a new online mapping tool that shows you where you can travel via public transit within a given time from any destination. It was developed in Germany by Stefan Wehrmeyer and seems like it’d be an excellent resource for anyone who is a frequent bus or light rail user.
Simply drop the pin at your origin, type in your destination, slide the time scale (the default is 15 minutes) and voila, you get an idea of where you can travel within that time-frame.
I dropped the pin near my home address in North Portland and here’s what the map returned for a 15 minute time-frame…

Hard to believe it’s already here again, but the biggest and baddest multi-day, grassroots extravaganza of bike fun in the world gets started this Thursday. That’s right, it’s time for Pedalpalooza!
This year’s crop of rides — nearly 250 of them between June 9th and 26th — is very impressive. The creativity of people who love bikes never ceases to amaze me. Take a look at the calendar and start planning now to make the most of this great bike fun fest. Whether you like costumed rides, pub crawls, rock star-themed rides, naked rides, family rides, or whatever you can think of, chances are there’s a ride just for you (and if there isn’t, feel free to add one yourself!).
