Car and Driver Magazine, one of America’s most respected automobile enthusiast publications with a circulation of 1.3 million, published an investigative report in their July issue titled, The State of the Union’s Roads: What’s happening to our playground? The American highway is broken. And broke.

The report details the bleak financial picture that states find themselves in as Washington tries to figure out how to move our country’s transportation investments forward. It’s an engaging read and includes good context for the national transportation spending debate.

Industry roundup: Circulus, Cyclone, Rapha, and manufacturing potential

Circulus will go from a Portland

Lots of news on the bike industry front of late. Not only are local companies continuing to make waves nationally, but there’s quite a bit of buzz and attention for bumping up manufacturing of bikes and parts in Portland. I’ve got a lot more to report on this; but for now, I’ve got a roundup of industry news, followed by links to a podcast of a bike manufacturing discussion and an article on bike manufacturing published today by Neighborhood Notes.

Circulus to take center stage at Interbike
Interbike is the largest bike industry show in America. Held in Las Vegas, it’s the place where the entire bike world converges to hammer out deals and see the latest products and trends. At the center of attention this year will be the Circulus mini-velodrome. Circulus is a 45-degree banked, circular wooden track that was purchased by North Portland based Portland Design Works earlier this year.

A Williams Ave resident addresses history, traffic safety issues

The N Williams Ave project continues to inspire a robust discussion about race, bicycle infrastructure and gentrification in North Portland. If you are interested in how these topics intersect in Portland (or how they don’t), I recommend reading through the many thoughtful comments left on previous posts.

Early this morning, a comment came in from Donna Maxey that I felt was worth bringing to the Front Page. You’ll recall that Ms. Maxey was featured in my recap of the last meeting where she explained the context for the hurt and anger that she and others in the community feel around this project.

Maxey is not only a long-time Williams resident, she is also the co-creator of Race Talks, which is billed as an, “interactive panel presentation and dialogue on race.”

Since my name was mentioned so frequently, I thought I would weigh in on this topic in print. By the way, I, too, am a bike rider and an enthusiastic walker. Somehow the point I made initially about this meeting was lost in the fervor. Let me say at the onset, I am not a spokesperson for “the Black community” because it doesn’t exist as a monolithic entity anymore than the White community does.

This is the first time that the O-Lab will be open to the public in Oregon.
