The other day riding home from work I had an interesting interaction.
I was riding my bike up N. Mississippi Ave. just past Widmer Brewing (map) when I noticed a big car door swing open ahead of me. Without making a sudden move, I positioned myself into the center of the lane to avoid the hazard. A few seconds later I heard the all too familiar roar of a car engine. Soon, just a few inches from my thigh, a car buzzed angrily by. It was obviously done on purpose (trust me, I’ve been riding on city streets long enough to know).
I was operating completely within the law. I was on a small side street were traffic should move slowly. There was no need for this man in the car to pass me like that. I was angry. So, in order to make sure I got the guy’s attention, I looked square into his rear-view mirror and flipped him off.

At a meeting of the Oregon Bicycle Tourism Partnership in City Hall yesterday, Travel Oregon unveiled details of how cycling fits into their $1 million national marketing campaign.
Cycling is one of three main pillars (along with outdoor recreation and, somewhat inexplicably, golf) of Travel Oregon’s current “Adventurecation” campaign. At the meeting yesterday, Travel Oregon marketing staffer Michael Sturdevant took us through the details of the campaign and shared some of the materials that go along with it.
21st Avenue Bicycles in Northwest Portland needs some help designing a new logo so they’ve launched a contest to see which local designer can create the best one.
The designer of the winning logo will see their work all over town on the shop’s ads, on their website, and on a sticker placed on every bike sold in the shop. In addition, the winning designer will get $100.00 cash, a Chrome bags laptop sleeve, and 10% off everything in the store for as long as the logo is in use.
Here’s what the they’re looking for:
The Hillsdale Bicycle Coalition — who we introduced you to back in October — is celebrating their first real victory. Last Friday, crews installed three bike racks in front of OM Base Yoga in the Hillsdale Town Center (which happens to be an official, City-recognized town center) and the fledgling advocacy group says there’s a lot more to come.

Metro has acquired rights for a trail easement across two properties in central Tigard that will allow them to add length to the popular Fanno Creek Greenway Trail. It’s not a huge piece of the trail, but it helps close a glaring gap that currently exists just northwest of Main Street in Tigard.
With the legal rights secured to build the trail behind the two properties at the corner of SW Tigard and Grant Avenues, Metro will be able to build an additional 865 feet of trail. Metro paid $52,000 for the three acre easement, using money from its $227 million natural areas bond measure that voters approved in 2006 (this is the first trail deal made with that money).
