Great local lineup for Inner Southeast Get Together

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Just a reminder to stop by our Get Together this Thursday the 23rd from 5pm to 7pm at the Green Dragon (928 SE 9th Ave).

We have a great lineup forming of folks who do business in inner industrial Southeast Portland, or who can speak to citywide issues. Ellen Vanderslice from the City of Portland will update us on the progress of the Bike Master Plan; Chris Smith of Portland Streetcar will be on hand to discuss progress in planning future streetcar lines in this area and in the city as a whole; Edwin Skaug will talk about building up his bike-based mobile convenience store business; Jed Lazar from Soupcycle will update us on the current status of the Bicycle Business League; Todd Fahrner from Clever Cycles will talk about their upcoming events; and there may be a few more, so stay tuned!

This Get Together is particularly close to our heart, as it is only a few blocks from our office — we’re really looking forward to meeting up with all you neighbors, coworkers, commuters, and the many, many others of you who ride, work, live, and play in this area.

More of what’s in store for SE Clinton bike street makeover

“Bike Flags” are one of several
concepts the city hopes will
help identify SE Clinton as a
bike priority street.

The City of Portland has shared more of the design elements they’re hoping to bring to Clinton Street as part of their Clinton Street Bike Boulevard Enhancement Project.

Earlier this month, we shared a few peeks of some of the artistic signs, pavement markings, and new bike parking designs slated to appear on the popular bike street.

The Bureau of Transportation is working with local artists to put a new type of aesthetic spin on the street in order to strengthen its identity as a bicycles priority street. Here’s what looks like it could become a logo for the all-new Clinton Street.

And here are more of the design elements under consideration:

The City has also uploaded maps of the sections of Clinton where these design elements would be placed. See those maps and learn more about the project on PBOT’s Clinton Street Bicycle Boulevard Enhancement Project website.

Tigard to form Bicycle Advisory Committee: City responds to recent coverage

After years of encouragement from advocates and citizen activists, the City of Tigard says they plan to establish an official Bicycle Advisory Committee.

During a phone call, City of Tigard transportation project engineer Mike McCarthy told us the decision to form the committee comes as part of a larger effort. McCarthy said the Bike Advisory Committee will be a sub-committee of the newly formed Transportation Advisory Committee.

The City of Tigard has received a grant from Metro to help create a new bike map (City provides the data, Metro does the printing). According to McCarthy, they’re looking to pull together a group of citizens to help identify routes for that project and he expects those people to form the basis of the Bike Advisory Committee.

U.S. Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) introduced the Green Routes to Work Act of 2009 into Congress yesterday.

The bill looks to promote “low-carbon” transportation options by providing tax credits for both employers and individuals.

In a press release about the bill, Blumenauer states:

“With global warming on the rise, and Americans’ waistlines ever expanding, it is time to level the playing field for transportation options that are clean, healthy, and save people money at the pump…

For too long, the federal government has supported commuters who drove to work but has not helped those who use other methods of transportation.”

Riding on Oregon’s first official State Scenic Bikeway

Ride to Monmouth-14

Last Friday a few friends and I decided to ride our bikes down to Monmouth (about 15 miles west of Salem) for the start of the Cycle Oregon Weekend event.

When I checked the map to plan the route, I realized this was a perfect opportunity to test out the state of Oregon’s first fully signed and mapped, official State Scenic Bikeway.

The Scenic Bikeway program was first proposed back in 2004 by (coincidentally enough) Cycle Oregon, but the program is just now gaining speed.

Performance (Nashbar) CEO on credit card fraud: 150,000 customers affected

CEO of Performance said 150,000
customers were affected by credit
card fraud.

Seeking to explain their response to a credit card security breach, I got a call last week from the PR spokesperson for Performance Bicycle Inc.

Performance owns Nashbar, a large online retailer that recently acknowledged that credit card scammers hacked into their site, took over customer accounts and made fraudulent charges.

After BikePortland and one other local media outlet reported on the situation, the Performance spokesperson contacted us and said CEO Jim Thompson wanted to “shed some light” on what happened.

Had my Kryptonite U Lock in the basket; was in my backyard as it has been for months. I know this was stupid, lesson learned.

Tried to list this months ago but server was down for a few days and I forgot to check back.

The Bicycle Film Festival is headed to Portland.

Tickets went on sale today and are $8 per program or $23 for a Festival Pass. The fest will happen over two nights. On Friday there are two programs and then a late night roller racing event at Rotture (315 SE 3rd Ave). On Saturday, things kick off with the BFF Alleycat, then there are three programs followed by an “After Party Extravaganza” at The Branx (320 SE 2nd Ave).
