Portland bike parking provides lessons for New York City

Still from video — Watch it below

Streetfilms, the video-journalism arm of the New York City-based Livable Streets Network, has published a film that focuses on Portland’s signature bike parking treatments: bike oases and bike corrals.

The film features PDOT staffer Greg Raisman (who was behind Portland’s first-ever corral at N. Shaver and Mississippi), Belmont-area business owner Bill Stites (he makes very cool utility trikes), and Richard Satnick, co-owner of Laughing Planet Cafe.

From The City of Tualatin (emphasis mine):

“On Tuesday August 12, 2008 at 6:39pm, Tualatin Police and Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue responded to a report of an assault between 3 males on SW Boones Ferry Rd and SW Ibach Street. Several citizens called 911 reporting that 2 men, in a truck, were beating a man on a bicycle.

Some of these citizens actually followed the suspect vehicle as it left the city, heading towards Wilsonville and provided police with a description of the truck and license plate.

Here’s the story from KTVZ in Bend:

“Callers to Deschutes County dispatch around 4:15 p.m. said a man apparently in his 30s was down near the corner of Southeast 2nd Street and Miller Avenue (north of Wilson Avenue) and was bleeding from the head and not breathing…

Officers said it appeared the bicyclist – who was not wearing a helmet – was heading north in the bike lane when struck by the SUV, whose driver stopped and remained on scene.”

According to The Oregonian, the Portland Parks Bureau announced today that the building in Waterfront Park (just north of the Hawthorne Bridge) that used house McCall’s Restaurant will be turned into Bike Republic.

Bike Republic is a concept created by Portlander Ken Nichols (in photo at right) and the plan is to turn the building into a full-service bike commuter facility.

When we last checked in with Nichols back in April, his plan was to offer bike rentals, repair, and commuter amenities (like a place to change and shower), a cafe (to be operated by popular burrito joint Laughing Planet), and a small bike retail shop.

Metro wants feedback from “the bike community” at their upcoming public workshops on their High Capacity Transit plans:

Here’s more information, followed by details on the workshops:

Metro begins process to identify next 30 years of High Capacity Transit projects

The Portland metropolitan region is home to a pioneering transit system. Over thirty years ago, the region decided to grow differently than other cities when elected leaders and citizens rallied against construction of freeways through developed neighborhoods and, instead, directed resources to a light rail project along I-84. Since then, the region has constructed 44 miles of light rail (Blue, Red and Yellow lines). An additional 6.5 miles of light rail (Green line) and 14.7 miles of commuter rail (WES) are currently under construction. These lines connect the far reaches of the urban area from Hillsboro to Gresham and from north Portland to Clackamas – and to many neighborhoods in between.
