Trek Pres plugs Portland, prods industry to do more
A few weeks ago, I reported on a presentation that Trek Bicycles President John Burke gave at the National Bike Summit.
and tireless bicycle advocate Jay Graves.

It was a preview of a presentation he gave just a few days ago at the Taipei Cycle Show. Borrowing in style and tone from Al Gore in his heralded Inconvenient Truth slideshow, Burke waves a warning flag to America’s bicycle industry.
He says that global trends in obesity, urbanization, pollution, and congestion pose major challenges that can be solved by the industry if more action and resources are directed to bicycle advocacy instead of product development and marketing.

I know this isn’t exactly breaking news, but thought I’d share a recording I made at the recent National Bike Summit.
Bicycle barometer effort picks up steam
a “bicycle barometer” to Portland.
Michael Downes is relatively new to Portland but he has wasted no time in getting involved with the bike community.
After reading an article about a bicycle barometer in Italy, Downes thought it would be a perfect fit for Portland and now he has set off to make it happen.
He has started a blog for the project and he came to a recent Shift meeting to share his ideas and get feedback.

Report from Salem: Fixed-gear bill moves forward
Senate Bill 729, which intends to clean up Oregon law regarding the brake requirement for bicycles and add an exception for fixed gear bicycles, took a step toward becoming law today.
The bill received a hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee at the state capitol in Salem.
Joining me to testify in support of this bill were bike lawyer Mark Ginsberg, BTA lobbyist Scott Bricker, former bicycle messenger Hazel Gross, and Republican Senator Jason Atkinson.
