I’m back from Vancouver BC. I intended to post more stories throughout the weekend, but that didn’t work out. Instead, here’s a full wrap-up of all the action…

“Citizen Smith” throws his helmet into the ring

After much speculation, noted citizen activist and blogger Chris Smith has officially declared his run for a spot on Portland’s City Council.

He plans to make the news public at an event on Wednesday (9/26) morning at Skidmore Fountain (see below for event details).

Smith will run for the council seat currently occupied by Sam Adams. Adams hasn’t made his future plans known yet (although there is speculation he might give up his seat to run for Mayor). So far, Smith will run against Ethos Music founder Charles Lewis.

Google, Specialized want to see your best your pedal-powered projects

Google and Specialized Bicycles have teamed up to take the bike company’s long-time marketing slogan, “Innovate or Die” to an entirely new level.

The companies, along with San Francisco ad firm Goodby Silverstein & Partners, are holding a contest to see who can come up with “innovative ways to harness pedal power”. Participants are being asked to create a two-minute or less YouTube video by December 15th. The grand prize is $5,000* and the winner will announced in January.

Bricker will address Congress about Safe Routes Program

Scott Bricker, the Interim Executive Director of the Portland-based Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA), is set to testify before a Congressional committee during a trip to Washington DC next week.

On Monday, Bricker will join Deb Hubsmith of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, and the Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee James Oberstar (D-MN), for a press conference where they will unveil the most recent National Safe Routes to School Report.
