Dave Aldersebaes moved to Portland just one year ago, but, as founder and leader of the Ironclad Cycling Team, he has already made an impact.

The former Wisconsin State Criterium Champion and freelance bike journalist (he writes for Pez Cycling News) came to Portland for a job as
Western regional sales rep for Ironclad Performance Wear (they make “task specific gloves and innovative workwear,” primarily for the construction trades market).

With an eye toward combining his work and his passion for cycling, Aldersebaes hatched an idea. He knew Ironclad’s work gloves were perfect for riding, so why not sponsor a team? When he realized how much his company spent on one, full-page advertisement in a construction trade magazine, he figured he could do a lot more for a lot less.

On their 11 o’clock newscast last night, KGW (who has been covering this case since the beginning) reported that the family of accused road rager Johnny Eschweiler has freed him on a reduced bail.

KGW reporter Scott Burton said that Eschweiler’s attorney, “argued the (bail) amount (originally set at $500,000) was not only excessive but unconstitutional…and the Judge agreed.”

KGW says the Judge allowed Escweiler’s family to free him on $50,000, just 10% of the original bail amount.

PDOT reveals potential route, details of Sunday Parkways

Potential Sunday Parkways route.

The City of Portland’s Transportation Options division has taken a step forward in their quest to pull off a ciclovia-type event — which they call “Sunday Parkways” — in Portland by next summer.

The event is being modeled after a successful program in Bogota, Colombia which shuts down 113km of major roads to motorized vehicles and draws 1.5 million citizens into the streets every Sunday.

Yesterday, an options staffer sent an email sent to the Chairs of several neighborhood associations in North Portland to schedule a meeting to garner feedback about the idea.

The folks behind the North Portland Greenway Trail are some of the hardest working advocates I’ve ever come across.

They are constantly doing whatever they can to share their vision for a new riverfront trail that would connect the Eastbank Esplanade (at the Steel Bridge) to Cathedral Park in St. Johns.

O’Donnell tragedy sparks “And we Bike” safety campaign

(Photo: Jonathan Maus)

The death of 66 year-old Timothy O’Donnell last June in Washington County continues to spark activism over safety concerns on rural roads.

The tragedy helped shine a light on bike safety during the last legislative session in Salem and was a key ingredient in the passage of the Vulnerable Roadway Users Bill. His death also spurred his family to create a memorial fund that is being administered by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA).

Now, a coalition of advocates and community groups — including the BTA, the Washington County Bicycle Transportation Coalition, the Bike Gallery, and Portland Velo — have launched, “And we Bike”, which they describe on their newly launched website as, “an effort to increase awareness of these serious safety issues.”

The new, double-wide bike lane on SE Madison Ave that I reported about last week is now fully complete.

The new markings include side-by-side bike lane symbols to denote the passing lane and skip-striping both where the lane widens (and then narrows) and to separate the slow and fast lanes.
