RiverPlace path bike access on committee agenda tonight

Tonight’s Portland Bicycle Advisory Committee (PBAC) meeting will take up the issue of bicycle access along the Willamette Greenway Trail at RiverPlace.

The issue came to a head when a member of a condominium owners association allegedly placed a “No Bikes” sign in the middle of the path (see photo). The owner of Waterfront Bicycle Rentals is concerned at what she feels is an increasingly anti-bike stance by the condo owners.

I posted a story about this that sparked a heated discussion about whether or not bicycles belong on what has become a very congested path.

Kris Schamp has done it again. The man that has injected life into the Portland race scene with his popular short track mountain bike race series and events at Kruger’s Farm on Sauvie Island, has just announced his latest creation: The Kruger’s Kermesse Farm Crit.

Borrowing from his Belgian roots, Schamp wants to bring the “kermesse” — a traditional Belgian-style summer bike race that accompanies a celebration and feast — to the Rose City.

Slated for September 15, the “cyclocross-style criterium” will take place on the farm roads of Kruger’s Farm on Sauvie Island (just a few miles north of Portland).

Would Critical Manners catch on in Portland?

Critical Mass August - Portland OR

Portland Critical Mass, August 2005.

While bouncing around some bike links the other day, I came across a story published yesterday in the L.A.Times about the age old question over the intentions and impacts of Critical Mass.

That debate is nothing new, but at the end of the article the writer mentioned a ride called Critical Manners. I read more about the concept (check out this story in the SF Chronicle) and instantly wondered whether this was something we should do in Portland.

Continuing the drumbeat of dissatisfaction with this year’s Bridge Pedal is a front page story in the Metro section of today’s Oregonian that details the problems with the ride and grievances experienced by many participants.

Reporter Helen Jung opens the article with, “Officially, it’s called the Providence Bridge Pedal. But the annual bike ride over Portland’s bridges earned a new name Sunday — Providence Bridge Ped-debacle.”

Her story reveals new information about the now infamous Ross Island Bridge bottleneck:

“We are gravely concerned about this issue… This would impact many cyclists who enjoy riding to and around Rocky Butte.”
-Resident Mike Loftus

Some outer northeast Portland residents are worried what a proposed development might mean to bike safety in their neighborhood.

Avid cyclists and neighborhood residents Amy and Mike Loftus say a Canadian-based land developer is hoping to sell property to a big-box retailer that could bring a 240,000 square foot Wal-Mart (or similar) store to the corner of NE 82nd Ave. and NE Siskiyou (see map below).

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Coming to Portland this weekend.

A “Zeppelin of Love” full of fun-seeking cyclists is on its way from Los Angeles to Portland and they call themselves the Midnight Ridazz.

The Midnight Ridazz began in 2004 when eight friends got together to ride the streets of Los Angeles. Or, as one of the Ridazz — who goes by the name Placid Casual — put it, “we thought it would be fun to see Los Angeles from a different perspective than the usual one (through a car window at high speed), and to make our own free entertainment on a Friday night.”
