San Francisco police work with bike advocates on training video

Still from video.
(Watch via YouTube below)

While doing research for a story, I noticed something interesting on the home page of the San Francisco Bike Coalition the other day.

They’ve partnered with the SF Police Department to create a new training video (YouTube embed below).

Fully scripted and acted out by real people (not actors, so the cheese factor is a bit elevated), the video explains bicyclists’ legal rights and illustrates common cycling situations and the appropriate police response they require.

Save Madison South Ride/Rally

Save Madison South!

We are avid cyclists and residents of outer NE Portland, at the base of Rocky Butte, where a Canadian-based land developer is hoping to sell property to a proposed ‘big box’ retailer. This would be roughly a 240,000 sq ft ‘Super Big Box’ resulting in 9,000 additional car trips per day. The location is at 82nd and Siskiyou and is heavily used by pedestrian and bicyclists. We are gravely concerned about this issue and are hoping to get Portland area cyclists concerned also. This would impact many cyclists who enjoy riding to and around Rocky Butte, so we are organizing an opportunity for cyclists to get involved.

We will be setting up a table at the top of Rocky Butte on August 18th from 9am-2pm where people can sign letters of protest, donate money (all fundraising is going towards paying for legal, land use and traffic experts who will help make our case), and/or just ride to show support in the effort to maintain livability in this neighborhood.

Feel good that you are involved in keeping Portland bike accessible! This is a no-host ride, pedal at your own pace!!! At the top of Rocky Butte we’ll provide Clif Bars (while supplies last). You’ll also be able to help save the neighborhood by signing letters and donating to Save Madison South. All fundraising is going towards paying for legal, land use and traffic experts who will help make our case.

GRAND PRIZE!!!
PEARL iZUMi® PACES SAFE DEVELOPMENT. As a responsible leader in the cycling industry, Pearl iZUMi has adopted a firm stance which incorporates both financial sponsorship of worthy organizations and support of advocacy groups whose main goal is to forward cycling and pedestrian safety.

Area cyclists donating $10 or more to the Save Madison South Coalition will qualify to win a Pearl iZUMi prize package valued at $150! Winning entries – one male, one female – will be chosen at random by Save Madison South representatives. Prize packages include Pearl iZUMi shorts and a jersey.

We appreciate your help in keeping Portland bike accessible.
Sincerely,
Mike and Amy Loftus
