Portland’s green policies add $2.6B to local economy

Economist Joe Cortright has just released a white paper titled “Portland’s Green Dividend” that claims our city’s land use and transportation policies, combined with our high rate of transit and bike use contribute $2.6 billion to our local economy every year.

The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) were busy this weekend issuing citations to cyclists at two Portland biking traditions: the monthly Midnight Mystery Ride and the weekly Zoobomb.

Both rides have grown in popularity over the years and riders reported mass ticketing at both events. The coordinated — and seemingly planned in advance — enforcement stings have some wondering whether the PPB is just trying to keep riders safe or if they are attempting to completely squelch the events.

The Midnight Mystery Ride (commonly referred to as MMR) is a monthly event where cyclists meet at midnight and ride to a mystery location in order hang out and enjoy an outdoor party.

Hit and run on STP; driver arrested

The Oregon State Police have arrested the driver of a Jeep Cherokee who struck and injured a bicyclist participating in the Seattle to Portland bike ride this morning.

The incident happened just east of Columbia City on Highway 30.

40 year-old northeast Portland resident Daniel Whittlinger veered over the fog line and rear-ended Gerald Marvin, a 24 year-old from Seattle. Whittlinger allegedly stopped and then fled in his vehicle and was stopped by the St. Helens Police Department about eight miles east of the crash scene.
