Over the weekend, the discussion over enforcement against bicycles in North Plains continued both in the comments of my post from Friday and on the OBRA email list.
Among the reactions was a comment by North Plains Police Chief Scott Whitehead. Whitehead wrote in to clarify his position on the situation:
“It seems that several people have taken my comments out of context…Our efforts to step up enforcement at stop signs has been focused towards everyone…
I just returned from a much-needed mini-vacation to the coast (Fort Stevens to be exact, more photos and story later).
Looks like there was tons of bike action while I was gone.
Big crowds and large fields were reported at the Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge track race. Here’s a recap of Day 1 and the Oregonian has a story in their Sports section today on one of the racers, Jenn Wangerin.

Come support the Community Cycling Center with a bike ride event you will never forget. The Hottest Day of the Year Ride, on Sunday, August 5th, is a fun bike ride that begins in NW and covers two courses, a family-friendly 15-mile ride and a 40-miler for more experienced riders. The finish line rewards riders with a cool make-your-own sundae bar and a gigantic good-natured water fight that will attempt to make the world record for largest water fight ever recorded.

Portland’s second annual Low-Car Diet begins July 9 and will continue through August 6. During this time 30 Portland residents have agreed to ‘trim the automobile waistband’ and hand over the keys to their own car for the entire month. For many participants, the Low-Car Diet Challenge is a fun way to test out whether permanently reducing personal car use is a viable option for them in the Portland area.
To make the Challenge fun and a bit easier, the participants will be given a monthly transit pass, a Flexcar membership and a $200 driving credit, a $50 gift certificate to Bike Gallery, free grocery delivery service from New Season’s Market, a Chinook Book, and for those that go the whole month, a round trip ticket on Amtrack Cascades anywhere between Eugene to Seattle .
