🚨
6/20: Hello readers and friends. I am having my second (of two) total knee replacement surgeries today so I'll be out of commission for a bit while I recover. Please be patient while I get back to full health. I hope to be back to posting as soon as I can. I look forward to getting back out there. 🙏. - Jonathan Maus, BikePortland Publisher and Editor

Tomorrow at the Bagdad Theater is the free Film Celebration of Portland Transportation. The event runs from 2-4pm and it promises to be a great show. There will be 11 short, locally made films and talks from various transportation insiders, including Chris Smith from Portland Transport and Scott Cohen from Portland State University who will speak about the history of bicycles in Portland.
Some of the films slated for screening include:
Tim Harvey is on the final leg of his trip from Vancouver to Vancouver. This amazing explorer has ventured around the world by bike, foot and boat, and his entire route was emissions-free…as in no motorized power was used.
Northeast Portland resident Richard Wilson is on a Dutch bike kick. Like myself, he’s especially smitten with cargo bikes, or “bakfiets.”
In fact, he likes them so much, he’s started a Bakfiets blog that he hopes will become the, “…go-to resource for bakfiets and to stimulate serious interest in the bike as a solution for the US market.”
Richard’s motivation is not just from bike lust, he’s also expecting his second child next month and he’s looking forward to blogging about how well babies and bakfiets mix.
If you like to mix bikes into your Halloween festivities, you’ll have plenty of options this weekend.
Tonight there are two big group rides that will give you a chance to dress up and ride with other spooky cyclists. There’s the traditional Critical Mass ride that leaves from the North Park Blocks (Burnside & Couch) and the People’s Ride, which is a new ride that leaves from Ladd’s Circle Park (SE Harrison & 16th, event flyer here). Time to meet for both rides is 5:30 and they’re expected to meet up with each other at some point.

This morning I met Matt Bracken, a 20-year bike industry veteran best known for his work as President of Independent Fabrications, a company widely respected for their custom-made bicycles.
Matt was in town for some dealer visits (including Veloce on Hawthorne) and I caught up with him at Albina Press in North Portland before he headed down to Eugene and Bend.
IF started 11 years ago from the ashes of another fabled, Somerville, Massachusetts-based bike maker, Fat City Cycles. In just over a decade, IF has grown to 13 employees. What I like about IF, besides their stunning bikes, are the values and the business practices they’ve adhered to even as the company has had great success and growth.
I don’t know much about politics, but I know what I like.
That’s why I’m going to fill in the bubble for bikes and vote “Yes” on Measure 26-80.
Passage of 26-80 will do lots of great stuff for the health and livability of our region. The cash raised would help Metro finish gaps in several popular trails (like the Springwater) and make connections from local to regional trails (like the Gresham-Fairview Trail).
I can’t believe a certain local weekly newspaper thought it would be cool “send a message” to Metro and tell folks to vote no on this.
